Hope you have good investments; b/c it'll be a rocky road ahead.

How so?

@Bigwavedave
21,000,000,000,000 of debt for starters. And that is just the national debt. Many states are terrible financial shape & can't possibly full fill their pension obligations.

All the stuff I used to do before I went to work - and after I came home from work - and allllll weekend long - I now do at a very leisurely pace. Some days, not at all. You are in panic mode because you (like I was) have been on that hamster wheel for so many years that you can't imagine what it is like to not be going 110 mph allllll the time. It will take a period of time to adjust. You will feel guilty about not having accomplished many, many things each day.....this will pass. You will feel guilty about having a beer at 10:30 am on a hot summer day.....this will pass. You will feel guilty about not "keeping in touch" with people from work that you thought you really liked except now you realize that not talking to them every day doesn't bother you a bit. This, too, will pass. 😉
Stop taking everything so seriously.....breathe...smile (it will drive everyone around you crazy)...sleep like a baby....
Best wishes on a hugely successful "third act", my friend. 😉

I am about six months away and am looking forward to it...the best advice my sister gave me (she retired 4 years ago at age 60) is to be adaptable. You are not locked into anything...if you volunteer and don't like it, move on...if you just want to hang out at the beach for a while, you can...if you want to go back to work part time, do it...as long as you are financially able, you really have the most choices.

Be sure to register with medicare even if you may not use it right away when you turn 65. You can three months in advance and four months after...the penalty for not doing so is huge, so mark your calender.

Plan when you will take social security and be sure to learn which funds to draw from if you have retirement accounts. My financial advisor saved me a ton of potential taxes just by planning when and how much to withdraw in the future. I had no idea.

You will be fine, Dave...breathe and enjoy it...you have worked hard!

Someone told me a while ago and it has stayed with me and I will be ready when the time comes..... "You don't retire from something, you retire to something"..... All you have to do is chose the something that will work for you

Well I am in sales and have had to " make a monthly goal" for 30 years. I want to stop that .

@Bigwavedave understand.... whatever you choose, best of luck going forward and most importantly, have fun

@maturin1919 especially not a sales goal lol. Thanks . I'm tired I don't want a retirement job .I have worn out 3 cars with 250k each and have over 4 million actual air miles.

There are lots of myths about social security. Don’t believe anything you hear until you talk to someone who works for the agency. ?

Wait what?

Be prepared robe busier than when you were working...lol When you are retired, then people start asking more favors "Since you have all this free time now, can you do this for me?" type of stuff...lol

It is entirely YOUR choice and decision as to what you do with your time. NO is just as good a word as YES and it is easier to change a no into a yes than a yes into a no.

Best time of your life, coming right up!

I have been retired for 24 years and have never worked for wages in all that time and do not intend to ever again.
The most important advice to anyone approaching retirement is to adjust your lifestyle to meet your retirement income. If you try to adjust your income to meet your lifestyle, you most likely will never be able to retire.
Next would be find a hobby that will occupy a lot of your time. I adopted computers as my hobby and it has been a pleasure and a learning experience and remains so to this day.
I enjoy traveling by car and by Amtrak just as an activity and I enjoy camping in my small Aframe camper.
I wish you well in your life's journey and success in finding what you are searching for in your life.

How about a picture of your camper!

@Bigwavedave

@jlynn37 I love camping ...how much does that weigh? Can you pull it with a small suv?

@Bigwavedave It weighs about 1500# and can be towed by most anything at least 6 cyl.

@jlynn37 that intrigues me . Looks fun

@Bigwavedave I see you live in NC and some of the best camping areas in this country are in the mountains and Nat'l Forests there and I have spend camping days there.

@jlynn37 yes nc and va both have amazing parks. Right now I have to sedan's, I was considering buying a small suv and contemplating a small travel trailer. My partner is not as enthused.

@Bigwavedave You'll never know if you never try. Buy a small inexpensive tent and go camping to see what you think.

hey - I used to have an A-Frame camper. Was the coolest looking thing you've every seen.

@Lavergne is it for sale?

@Bigwavedave .....sold it many years ago. But it was one of the nicest campers I've ever seen....and we used it for a long time.

It's just another part of life. It'll require adjustment, and flexibility, but it's doable.
I was forced into retirement, and I wasn't ready for it, so it took me a minute to get my bearings.
As long as you're financially prepared, and willing to do whatever you need to do remain so, you'll be fine.
You'll find other things to fill your days. Indulge yourself and do the things you've always told yourself "someday".
It'll be okay. Just be flexible, and ready for anything.

Gotta work on that flexibility by learning to touch my toes again.
