They did a survey on the most taxed village in medieval England. Worked out how many days it took before they were working for themselves. As it happens there now is a Mercedes plant there, where people are on good wages. The modern workers took twice as long before they were free of taxes.

And people have less days off every year than in medieval times. Those days off the people were required to attend church and do as the priests requested.
