I guess they could have done a sneaky catholic thing of making garments and such out of bulletproof materials. Making the bubble was really emphasizing that he needs protection from the perceived devil and therefore the need for religion. Honestly, sounds like just the right amount of manipulation from an organized religion.

Pope John Paul II. Shot in Italy. Came to Philly in 1979.

@Nardi just googled. ... I thought he was shot before he came to philly, but he was shot in '81. Two shots in intestine. One in arm. One in a finger.
