The Ukraine had always been an actual part of Russia until 1991 when through political pressure from the U S to annex the Ukraine main reason given was to allow the international community to have access to Chernobyl and as a peace move towards Poland.

The problem is that the U S/nato sponsored leadership of the Ukraine was corrupt and was selling illegal weapons to terrorist nations
There’s also the problem that the CIA was assisting the Chechnyian rebels as well as using the Ukraine to infiltrate Russia.

So just as we would with Puerto Rico or Alaska Russia is protecting their interests and Crimea actually voted to return to Russia but us and the Ukraine aren’t willing to give up their gateway to Russia.
So therefore why there’s a potential war about to happen.

i have a different take on it from those who have commented so far. i believe the crimeans who want to be russian are not real; it's pr that has filtered to us. russia has used military force and propaganda to take land that did not belong to it. it's as simple as that, and russia has worked hard to make it seem complicated.
