A nearby church closed a while back, after a long dwindling congregation, which i watched with much satisfaction, and, maybe a little pity. The new owners are turning it into an arts and music place. The cool cafe across the street bought some of the stately oak pews. The marquee out front no longer insists “GOD IS STILL SPEAKING”. A 100 year old church is now an agnostic music venue. I do believe Christianity is dying. Maybe not as quickly as I’d prefer. All I worry about is how much damage it does on its way out....
Here serious thought is being given to which churches should be preserved as monuments. A lot of smaller villages are losing their churches and it seems the landscape is changing, where a cluster of uildings surrounding a church spire would make a village. Soon the church spires and church bells will be a thing of the past.
Here in Broken Hill, N.S.W. Australia, we've had 7 churches close down over the last 20+ years and each of them has been re-vamped into something far more useful and productive, society-wise, 3 have been the smaller, suburban Catholic Churches and I'm waiting hopefully for the day when the Catholic Cathedral is closed down permanently, that will, indeed, be party time in a big way.
That is so wonderful to hear. Hopefully humanity is reaching a point of "had enough" of the bullshit and lies from these supposedly holy people. I especially love to hear another catholic church has gone down. My mother was raped by a catholic priest when she was 9 years old. I didn't find out until she was quite elderly, and it helped me to understand her hatred of the church and why my sister and brother and I were not ever pushed to go to church or believe.
@Redheadedgammy Very sad to hear what your mum was exposed to, my most sincere sympathies go out to her and to those who have suffered likewise throughout the centuries of Abuse by the Churches.
@Triphid She had a hard life growing up very poor working with her brother and sisters and parents on a farm in Saskatchewan Canada. She was always a rather sad person, never seeing much good in life. I never understood why she was so bitter and angry while I was growing up. Once her brother , my Uncle Tony, told me about it I understood her a lot better. She never had any kind of counseling as it wasn't even talked about. In fact my grandfather beat Tony for picking up an ax to go kill the priest for what he did to his little sister. The kids were told "the priest was a man of god and they should never question him or what he did! I so totally get why my mother hated the church, and why she never pressed my sister and I to go to church or even believe in god.
@Redheadedgammy That bit about " never questioning a priest" truly sucks BIG time because those predatory bastards hide behind things like that just as cockroaches hide in the darkness and cupboards, to me, they are BOTH VERMIN.
When I was just over 10 years old, I was sodomised by 3 devout Catholic males, all of them supposedly lay-preachers or whatever, they issued threats of death to my father and sister should I ever tell anyone what they'd done.
Just after my 18th Birthday I was riding my motorbike home one evening from an outback pub when ahead of me I saw a utility hit a ditch beside the road and saw it slowly burst into flames before I got there, the driver trapped inside was one of my 'assailants' and impulse made me try to get him out, but it was to no avail, the Fire Brigade arrived, as did the police and ambulance, the ambulance crew treated the burns to my hands ( luckily they were only somewhat slight) and I was told that I had tried to do a very brave thing and not to blame myself for being unsuccessful. to my mind it was One down to natural justice.
Two years later, whilst doing my nursing training the second was found dead, shot by his own hand with a suicide note stating that " he could no longer live with the guilt of his actions," then a month or so later I was rostered to "special care" a patient who was in the final stages of cancer to his entire genitals as well as having it have spread elsewhere.
Yes, I performed my nursing duties 100% correctly and with compassion and caring BUT during one of the moments when he was awake and aware I quietly reminded him of who I was and what he had done to me then I asked the Ward Sister could I be relieved from that duty telling her that I was feeling quite unwell.
I had 3 rostered days off from duties after that, returned to work, was placed back on ward duties in another ward due to a staff shortage there and on the next shift we learned that the patient had passed away during the night begging for forgiveness but never saying what he had done to be begging such forgiveness.
Though thoughts of revenge had crossed my mind, I never sought to act upon them since it would go completely against my nature and my oath as a Nurse.
I just accepted that somewhere, some how, natural justice had stepped in instead.
@Triphid I had to stop several times to wipe away my tears while reading this. That you were put thru such hell and grew up to be a nurse, taking care of others shows your character, strength and empathy. Then actually coming in contact with your rapists and not striking them or physically hurting them speaks volumes of what kind of human being you are. Oh that there were more people like you in the world.
@Redheadedgammy Thank you for your ever so kind comments, but they are somewhat undeserved as I only did and still do what I see as being in accordance to my moral codes and decency as a human being.
What really needs to go are the "mega" churches.
I think it's cool that they were able to do something else with that church.
As much as I would love to see religion take a hike, there are some very old churches that are historical landmarks. Not so much in the religion thing, but the architecture itself. Some of them are priceless, so I think it's a much better idea to use them for something else rather than destroying the buildings.
What a cool use for an old church building. I personally would like to buy the little church across the street and turn it into two apartments. It's on the Register of Historic Places so they wouldn't let me build a carport and entrances to each apartment from the side of the building.
There is a small church that was converted into a house here in town.
Right now I live in a converted 1910 high school.
@BlastedRedeemer Somebody is actually going to repurpose a motel here into efficiency apartments. You wouldn't think housing would be all that expensive here but due to no availability rent is high.
I lucked out and got into my building while it was still designated senior/disability housing. I pay less for a 2 bedroom than a lot of people pay for a 1 bedroom here.
I hate that people just tear old buildings down especially buildings with interesting architecture.
Another one bites the dust!!! I love to hear about church closings. It means that they can't keep spreading the lies. I've seen a lot of this happening with old churches, and think it's a great way to use the buildings for something good for ALL the people in the area.
Nice! Post pics of the conversion if you get a chance. I'd like to see how they remodeled it.
