"We look at the widespread impact of the government shutdown on Native American communities, as the Indian Health Service goes understaffed and a federally funded food delivery program to Indian reservations has halted. Democratic members of Congress held a hearing Tuesday on the effects of the shutdown on health, education and employment in Native communities. We speak with Mark Trahant, editor of Indian Country Today and member of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes."

As we heavily subsidize dairy so that no American residents have affordable food source, & we enable farmers to remain solvent, mass quantities of excess dairy in the form of butter , cheese & lard is dumped as welfare food into the reservations, the diabetes rate and average life expectancy for our First Peoples is 45. I have seen it in real time as I was invited to a group food fest "on the government's dime". Fry bread is not "Indian" food. It is Kit Carson's attempt to stave off Andrew Jackson's starve 'em into submission plan. Flour & water saved their lives & became a stable in the culture. Now with ubiquitous fast food in our faces the obesity diseases are at an all time high. Don't eat the white man's food.
Yes, both in reservations and at urban Indian health centers, this is putting the squeeze on. It’s wrong and dangerous and unacceptable.
One of our members is a teacher on an Indian Reservation not getting paid. This is wrong!!!!!!!!
