Well, I survived my first trip to the bible belt (Tennessee) in over a decade. Made it through without anyone going to church even though my family is very religious. Going to a church next Saturday for a group called The United Church of God. Apparently not the one everyone's used to. I'll let you know how it goes.
Memphis seems to be a buckle of the bible belt. I have lived in the West most of my life. I am working as a caregiver for my dad in Tennessee so for three years I have been trying to understand southerners. No luck so far. There are variety of folks here from ultra-conservative fundamentalist to liberal open minded types. It depends on whether you are urban or rural it seems. So far the only things I really like is sweet ice tea, moonpies and fried catfish. You can have the raving lunatics in these churches.
I was down there touring the Blue Ridge and Hilton Estate a few years ago (prior to finding this site) and I swear, a church every 500 yards, all in "you can eat off the driveway" condition....just amazing, and scary!
Congrats on your survival. Being a Tennessean, I know how hard it is to avoid the religulous. Best to you!
