How irreligious is Trump? Today's HuffPo article "A Former Pastor of Trump's Church Says He Never Saw Him There" ignores the 2016 NYT research noting that he "attended its Sunday services for almost 50 years," and that he was surely influenced by that church's prosperity-gospel minister Norman Vincent Peale.
The new article also echoes complaints of his scripture ignorance and that "Trump administration policies . . . seem to violate basic teachings of the Bible." But even if he hasn't been a services-and-rituals regular, Christian piety doesn't depend on church participation or religious knowledge, or progressive interpretations of what religion should be. Evangelicals, thinking of themselves as "born in sin," have a deeper reason not to disown him.
Have you ever heard him called an atheist, considering how many people say he couldn't be religious?
I think Trump, Obama, and Clinton have about the same amount of faith in God. It's likely zero, but all three have used religion to further their political careers. GWB was likely the only one of the last 4 Presidents stupid enough to actually believe the Christian nonsense.
