I’m feeling horrible tonight. A neighbour lost their 4 month old puppy. It’s going to get down close to -40C tonight. Everyone is on the lookout for her. Then I found a sparrow stuck in my laundry room (no idea how she got in there since the door to that room is always closed). I almost got her out the front door but she flew back in, hit a wall, and Salem (my cat) got her. I tried to save her but it’s too late. ☹️

I feel like crap. Can anyone spare a cute or funny pic or meme of animals to cheer me up?

Thank you everyone for helping me feel better. The puppy is still not found but everyone locally is braving the -30s/40s weather going out looking for her. I will be out checking the outbuildings on my property again. The last time their other dog escaped, he came to my place and I was able to return him to his owner. There is a chance the puppy might be around here somewhere. I did go out at midnight to check my horses last night (because it was -34C with windchill of -38C) and I didn't see or hear anything. And my horses are fine (woolly like some prehistoric mammoths) but I just wanted to make sure (gave them some oats). Neither my horses nor my dogs have alerted that there might be some strange animal out there. It's not looking very good for the puppy.

Sending warm thoughts. Poor puppy. With any luck someone took it in for the night.

If it is a euro sparrow your cat did well. A native sparrow not so much. =0{
Come home puppy.

It’s a female house sparrow. I wouldn’t want my cats to kill anything. I wouldn’t wish death on any bird on my property.

@graceylou Well the euro house sparrow is invasive & has decimated our native bluebird population along with habitat loss. So I try & destroy them as eggs along with the nest, that my bluebirds may thrive. The euros will be on their 2nd brood of 4 to 6 hatchlings before the bluebirds even get here on their migration. The euros will also murder the baby bluebirds & invade the nest just as Cortez invaded our native peoples land with terrible consequences. I know you love animal life & I understand your sensitivity. Nature is cruel & invasive species are expanding due to climate change & are more of a threat now than when we had winters. May all your blues be birds. =0}

@Countrywoman Humans are the most invasive species in my opinion. We ought to do something about them (us).

Lots of hugs coming your way. Realize that, after several days in your laundry room...the bird was probably near death from starvation and what you saw was its last ''gasp,'' so to speak. I know how you feel--my dog once killed a blue jay--a very rare bird here. Salem was doing what nature's programmed it to do. That's why domestic cats shouldn't ever be outdoors. I'm sorry for your experience and your neighbor's. Hope the puppy turns up! SOON!

Thank you.

The bird wasn’t in the laundry room until this afternoon or evening. I’d been in the laundry room earlier. With this extreme cold I didn’t keep any doors open to the outside. All my cats and dogs are indoor because I don’t want them to go after wild life. Sometimes mice get in and when the cats get them I take the mice from them. Some I manage to rescue alive.

There’s still no word on the puppy. I hope she manages to find a shelter somewhere.

@graceylou Me, too! If she's in a snowbank...it might keep her alive. Think of Eskimos and their sled dogs...in snow ''caves.'' I'm sorry about your week....sucks!

@LucyLoohoo Many people have barns, shelters, and outbuildings. Mat she finds one to hide in.

@graceylou Holding a good thought for any animal in trouble! In addition to our ice/snow storms...in Australia, it's so hot that pavement is melting.
