States trying to stop teachers from teaching about climate change in the classroom.
[psmag.com]
Teachers ought not advocate for political or social causes. In any class discussion both sides of an issue should be represented.
Schools exist to awaken the students, not to brainwash them into some dogmatic belief.
How do you feel about science being taught in school?
Science should be taught for what it is, not as a religion, and not twisted around into propaganda for some social cause.
@WilliamFleming science is evidence-based fact. You cannot twist science into propaganda any more than you can twist algebra into propaganda. If you think climate change is a social cause then I suggest you do a little research. It is a fact. If you average the top 7 scientific studies on the question of whether or not climate change is human-caused the consensus is 96%.(91%,93%, 97%, 97%, 97%, 97%, 100%) If you disagree with the hundreds of climate scientists and experts that partook in these studies then I have nothing but pity for you in your ignorance.
There are large numbers of qualified experts who are not on board with the zealous, religious-like campaign regarding climate change. It’s true that almost everyone agrees we are in a warm period. They agree that elevated levels of CO2 contribute to a warming earth. The disagreement is one of degree and level of urgency. They make these points:
The level of warming is slight, 0.13C/decade. At that rate Boston will be as warm as NYC in 150 years.
Climate models are unreliable. Remember. The Arctic was supposed to be ice-free by now. No one knows if the current warming trend will continue.
The percentage of warming caused by humans is small. There would be warming even without human input.
Not enough is known about the situation to justify a radical and costly campaign.
For teachers to indoctrinate children with fear, guilt and panic is not science—it is nothing but emotional ego posturing.
I say sure, teach and discuss the parts that are scientific and keep your fear-based OPINIONS out of it.
I never said opinion should be taught in science class so I don't know where you got that. Further you have shown me no evidence that that is being done. I believe enough is known about the situation and I do not believe that the amount of human contribution is small. Neither do the experts of which you are not one. When 96% of the experts in any given science state that something is true I take it as fact. I never heard that the Arctic was supposed to be ice free now but I have seen pictures taking decades apart that clearly show it is happening. Maybe you want to take a chance that this will cease to happen, but I do not. You are not competent to advise on what is considered a slight increase. Lastly there are not large numbers of qualified experts that agree with your point of view as 96% of them do not. The 13 names you provided are miniscule compared to the number of experts that disagree. I find that quite naive. I suggest you read the fifth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which has been observing human emissions and activities that have contributed to global warming since 1950.
Climate change is political? I always thought it was science. Maybe this is a good idea, I mean the kids are never going to have to know about politics as adults are they? And of course throughout their lifetimes they will never have to address people with differing points of view. Complete waste of time.
So, if one party makes evidence based decisions and incorporate them into their platform and the other party makes decisions and creates a platform based on greed and whimsy, those points of view have to be presented as equivalent?
"Hey kids, guess what you're all going to die, but that's political so I can't tell you about it."
What the proverbial hell is going on in the USA
All Rethuglican controlled legislatures or state government.
LOL I almost looked up that word!
Just as bad as creationism
Except this could kill us.
