Just to be pedantic, in Europe witches were not burned, they were hanged and drowned, heretics were burned.
However that painting is a special case, that is Joan of arc who was actually burned by the inquisition for being a transvestite, since she went against biblical teaching and wore trousers in battle (this portrait like most is inaccurate in this respect.)
