DO YOU BEALIVE THIS???
1 Samuel 15:3:
Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy[1] all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.
Deuteronomy 20:16-18:
However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. Completely destroy[1] them-the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites-as the Lord your God has commanded you. 18 Otherwise, they will teach you to follow all the detestable things they do in worshiping their gods, and you will sin against the Lord your God.
Hosea 13:16:
The people of Samaria must bear their guilt, because they have rebelled against their God. They will fall by the sword; their little ones will be dashed to the ground, their pregnant women ripped open.
Perizzites, huh? Think we still have a lot of those in modern-day religion. So, yeah, I believe Joel Osteen, Kenneth Copeland, Pat Robertson, and Creflo Dollar come to mind, as examples that could use a little destroying.
The Bible and the Catholic / Protestant followers are both full of hate, distrust, and anger towards others not of their faith. That all religions (in the case of your quotes -- pre-Jews) have slaughtered people in the name of their gods should not be surprising.
there are still a lot of fundamentalists who believe in that insanity & still lots of people suffering b/c of them.
Cite stuff like that to ANY Fundie Faithfool/s and you'll get the response, " But that is the Old Testament, the Old Covenant with God, it no longer counts since we now have a NEW Covenant, the NEW Testament, with Jesus."
When I get that response my immediate reply is, " So you can also ignore and reject the Command of this God of yours where it clearly states, Any person who deems to remove, erase or alter my words as set down within this book, my Holy Words/Bible, shall be seen as denying me, rejecting me and being blasphemous unto me,,,,etc, etc."
99.999% of the time it STOPS them completely in their tracks.
@Elganned Oh dear, you have blasphemed against the Omnipotent, Invisible, Imaginary Sky Daddy.....LOL
Where we, the Atheists/Agnostics, use rationality, etc, the Faithfools simply depend solely upon Cognitive Dissonance, where we are taught to think, consider, debate, ask questions and seek answers, etc, the Faithfools are merely taught to OBEY without question.
That is why they find what should be called, imho, Pseudo-relevance in both the O.T. and the N.T. BUT only where they are repeatedly INSTRUCTED to look.
The dislike is for the quoted scripture, not the post. I'm always confused by the negative emojis, I assume the poster gets credit for them regardless of what they are. If not, my apologies.
At any rate, I remember back in my evangelical daze, reading stuff like this un-ironically and un-critically. It was, after all, talking about some obviously guilty and wicked people from Long Ago, and so didn't conflict with god's love and mercy. I think part of why the compartmentalization works so well is the seeming remoteness of the account, back in the mists of history. It's like reading about the Battle of Helm's Deep, it just doesn't have a moral connection to the present day. It's easy to justify it on the basis that they had it coming, because you don't relate empathetically to them as humans, you don't bother to imagine the injustice of someone coming into your home and ripping your pregnant wife open when you personally had nothing to do with your society's decision to not worship this alien Jewish war-god.
Of course, all of this also works because Christian fundamentalism teaches corporate / societal / tribal / familial guilt, the notion that if you sin, your punishment falls not just on you, but on the next 7 generations; that it falls on your nation and by association on you, even if you did not personally participate in what your nation is guilty of, etc. This crazy idea is just accepted as normal without a single critical thought. Because god commands it, and commands things consistent with it. All the mayhem commanded in the quoted verses above is based on national guilt / sin, which is basically, not being Jewish, or more generically, on being the Other.
Why does God constantly need people to do His dirty work?
It's almost as if he can't do the dirty work Himself because He doesn't exist...
Yes, I often joke, "how shall you escape the wrath of Mordant" because there is no "wrath of god", it's just a projection to justify the wrath or judgment or pique of some human claiming to know god's mind.
But, he's a loving god. Ya think that god would'a realized that he created an inferior being and have some compassion. The bastard.
