The state of Missouri is advancing legislation to permit, (require?) teaching the bible in public schools. I assume they meant only their christian book... although I have not read the bill myself. What is to say then, that the koran, book of momon, or the viking sagas... for that matter, from also being taught. And what do they mean by "Teach" ? Teach the book exists? (I doubt that) Teach what parts? Comments? (I'm going to look into specifics. This was just on my morning news today) ((I don't live there, but I can see it out my front door.))
I would imagine by teaching they mean more proselytizing and by doing that they are opening up a can of worms for themselves. Which religion gets to be in charge. I wouldn't object to a class on religion done from a neutral position or even the Bible if the kids read it and discuss it without outside indoctrination but I am sure that is not what is proposed. My daughter became an atheist by reading the Bible and if they just started at Genesis 1, I doubt that they could get through that first book without a whole lot of kids questioning the logic of it and they're having to give it up.
