i actually met a guy that thinks the earth is flat. he was a neighbor where i was working. somehow it came up that he went somewhere (i forgot now) and i told him i went to NZ and it was an 11.5hr flight. he asked me how high the plane was.. i said about 40k feet. he then was saying something like 'i think science is like a religion.. to control people into thinking the same thing'. i asked him what does he think religion is for... i said it was to control people. he then went on to say that science teaches that the earth is round. i said yea. he then said something like 'if the earth is round then you would be able to go up in a plane and hang out till the earth twisted around then land.' i mentioned that i had googled why and that the way the earth's atmosphere and gravity works, it drags things around with it. then he says something like science teaches things in order to hide the true creator. after about 10-15m of being cordial i finally was able to break away and get some shit done. that was a first actually meeting somebody that thinks the earth is flat. i had hope until he said 'true creator.' i think they may also be a little over-religious.
That's amazing. The claims made by religion are utterly ridiculous when examined using the scientific method and I've known plenty of religious people that believe them anyway. But I have never actually met a flat earther. It makes me sad and even a little afraid when I see how religion inhibits a person's ability to think critically. And many of these people want to pass legislation based on these beliefs.
i'm beginning to think they are thinking if they get somebody to believe the earth's flat then that person will doubt science and then believe religious bullshit more easily.
We had one around here for awhile. Certifiably insane, it appeared. Crazy mathematical formulas with matching accusatory rants… I’d only ‘heard of them’ until then, and at that, thought it was a joke. Apparently not, but not worth delving into ..more like an example of those the tribe would have eliminated back when sanity meant survival.
Is the US public school system completely broken?
Maybe this craziness is due to a liberal ideology that faith and belief is as acceptable as facts and evidence?
Where you validate god and religion; maybe the consequence is any absurd belief is as good as another?
I was dating a girl a while back. Seemingly super personality. She was degreed, served her country as an officer for years... Now a civilian working a high level Navy job. On our 3rd date she let it slip about the theories she believes in... Faked moon landing, 911 hoax, contrails, etc. I ended the relationship telling her that she should find someone with the same beliefs as hers were not in sync with mine and the disparity was too wide.
Flash forward 3-4 months. I have a buddy I have known since childhood. We grew up together since we were 8 years old. We have stayed in touch, for the most part, for the past (almost) 50 years. We had always held the same views... Last I recall. He asked if I was seeing anyone... I told him about the aforementioned person and how I thought she was a kook. He laughed and said he believed in two of the things I mentioned... No moon landing and a totally different 911 conspiracy than the one she believed in. I was shocked!
So here is someone else that I need to let go out of my life. I just don't want anyone around me that is that far off base and whose opinions and beliefs I cannot trust. Not to say everyone should believe what I believe... But this shit is a different story altogether!
lol.. i knew a guy that thought the trails were some sort of pesticide/poison. he also claimed to have 'multiple chemical sensitivity'. i get nauseated by strong cologne or that old vinyl smell but get away and i'm ok. he'd claim to be sick for days. he died of lung cancer. he smoked those cheap cigars 'backwoods' or something like that. he never claimed to get any reaction off those cigars. i always put up with him because he was a supercool guy. i just thought he was over reacting most of the time.
Sad commentary on 21st century education, that it’s still failing to teach some people the basic scientific facts of how our universe works. Where are these people schooled, and how can such ignorance still be around in the Internet age? Perhaps that is actually the problem, the www is helping to regress civilisation, by the unchecked and unchallenged proliferation of conspiracy theories and crackpot ideas!
he was about 50yrs old. i think he grew into believing it...
I just recently reconnected with a girlfriend who, during our 4 years apart, came to believe that the earth is flat.
I believe this movement is a result of people's growing distrust of government. I concluded this once she proceeded to assert the moon landing was faked, 911 was a conspiracy and "gravity is not a thing."
I also concluded that 4 years apart clearly hadn't been long enough.
IMO, I think much of this flat Earth uprising has a religious motive.
Earth being round, doesn't give with Genesis.
Christ believed in what would later become Genesis and so did Mohamed.
I was raised in a very religious environment. Went to church often. That was in the 70s and 80s. It wasn't until I was a teenager did I read Genesis. When I did it was easy to see why they didn't preach it on church. Genesis really shows Christ and Mohamed weren't divine. It shows they were false profits.
Anyway there are two points I would like to make. The first is the flat Earth movement is likely fueled by a group of people which are Christian.
They likely understand millennials have easy access to execuative summaries to Genesis. This is bad news for all Jewish based religions.
Second. More important than first.
On this website a flat earther showed up. I think her name was Tracy anarchist. Anyway, she or possibly he, started a debate about the Earth being flat. She either left or blocked me when I asked her what the motive of a government would be for convincing its population the Earth is flat.
I also asked the question why would not only the modern goveents do this, but the Brittish and the very Chatholic Spanish Empire do it as well? What is the motivation over a 500 year span with 3 different world powers who didn't see eye to eye?
Anyway. I get you were annoyed by this guy, but maybe you can turn him and make the world a better place.
i think it's religious too by the way he said science hides the 'true creator'. you're right on
