I live in a very Christian and republican area. I'd love to meet a group of like minded people in my area. Just not sure how to go about it? Any suggestions?

I live in Christian, Republican-dominated Eastern Washington. As a Democrat, environmentalist, feminist and hiker, I joined:

  1. Women's hiking group
  2. Library book club
  3. Democrats of North Central Washington
  4. Citizens for Peace
  5. Anytime Fitness

I'm in the same number of groups. Haven't met anyone from them to date in two years and probably never will. Purely for shared interest and socializing.

@ToolGuy

Yes, Western Washington is far more liberal.

It enrages Eastern Washington Republicans that the population of King County (Seattle area) swings the entire state's vote liberal.

That's why we have a Democrat governor and two Democrat U.S. senators.

@ToolGuy

Ron Judd of the Seattle Times wrote a hilarious April Fool's Day column:

"To Wenatchee- Denizens of the channeled scablands. We build your roads, we build your universities, we fund your schools and what do we get in return? Endless carping about the annual Puget Sound clam digging schedule and the Lentil Festival of Ferry County. You want to secede? Go right ahead. We won't miss you."

For 40 years, Eastern Washington conservatives have been talking about creating two separate states, calling Eastern Washington "Liberty." It goes nowhere.

@LiterateHiker As with eastern Oregon the conservatives like Tradition and lack motivation. Nevermind that the progressive, left leaning west were the majority of the economic growth and taxes are generated don't support their "values". And as with most of the south, without these east and west coast money creator cities and states. They would all lose out on that sweet, sweet socialism they so harp about from their corportist masters.

@RobertFoley

"There are 12 Democrats in Wenatchee," was the joke when I moved here in 1984. In the 2018 midterm elections, over 46% of voters voted Democrat in Chelan and Douglas counties.

For 30 years, people from Seattle and California have been moving to Wenatchee. They love the hiking, skiing, fishing and other recreational activities.

Increased population brings more students.Young people are more progressive.

At Wenatchee High, we registered over 200 seniors to vote last April and September.

Right here's a good start. The more you post; the more followers you develop. Stay with it. Bolster and detail your bio, and post lots of pics...not just of you smiling...but you doing things....that's bound to increase your chances.

I use meetup.com to meet groups of people. There are a few atheist groups in my area.

I used the meetup app as well and discovered Bayou Atheist Secularist and Humanist (BASH). I've made wonderful friends in this southern conservative bible-belt area of the country. I'll be moving to the Denver area soon so I'm hoping to join a similar group.

I know the feeling. Same thing here in the bible belt of East Texas. Our people are out there. You’ll find them. Especially in CO.

4

Out in Grand Junction, the Unitarians might be the closest thing to atheist. Ha ha. Try to find professionals in the medical field, or other scientist types. I know there are some atheists over there, but probably hard to find. I have a household full of good atheists here in the front range, if you ever find yourself in the area.

Yes! Find the local academics!

4

Use the internet looking for "Meetup Groups"in your area, many subjects there; Hiking clubs, dining out, camera, software, robotics, etc.

This would've been my suggestion..

4

find Meet-up groups, start one, contact people here from your area, facebook, twitter...

Also, change the category of your post of general and hellos to Progressives and Socialists or share the post with other groups like atheists, bible belt survivors and other groups.

4

I agree with the others. Start or attend a Meetup.

@sweetcharlotte When i moved from NC after my divorce Meetup was how I found the Brevard Atheists! We just had a Meetup for a North brevard group that had eight people show up! Brevard county is seventy-nine miles long and twenty wide. Nothing is close. Try setting one up, might take a couple of months but if you have it somewhere fun like a brew pub it could get started!

4

Try Meetup.com . They might be able to help you with that.

Thanks for all the comments guys! Lots of good suggestions. I’ll look into the Unitarian church 😊

I have the same problem myself, that's the reason I am on this board. there is freedom from religious Society in my area. and they do have meetup groups I have yet to make contact with them. I like you am constantly frustrated with the fact that I cannot find like-minded people in my day-to-day life. I am a gun guy therefore I must be a Republican. I don't really have a choice I have to swallow the whole agenda.Feel Free at any time to argue with me on any subject might be fun

I also am a gun gal and same. I have friends that can’t believe I’m liberal with guns. It’s frustrating!!

Let's go shooting, rifle pistol shotgun

Move to Kentucky that all we have. I also would like to meet atheist and liberal mined people and sure not in this area all I see is MAGA hats.

FIND THE UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST!

You won't be disappointed.

Meetup.com basically said for atheist groups in my small town (Seneca, SC) "you fucked, dude."

I used to meet with a group of humanists from Clemson, SC, nine miles away. Largely, they discussed liberal democratic politics instead of religion.

Yea I’ve trued meetup and it was the same.

@Colorado88 The nearest large town to me is Greenville, SC. It's over an hour's drive away. It does have atheist groups. Time to get there, attend a meeting, possibly get a meal and get back gets a tad epic after the fifth trip.

@Nathan222 Adding to the complication is a Southern Baptist spouse. Petunia misses me if I'm gone for long periods of time. She would have to be drug kicking and screaming all the way there and all the way back no matter how civil they were to her.

3

Move to Boulder? Lol

If I could afford Boulder! 😂

3

I agree on checking out Meetup. Around here (well, sort of) we have Atheist, Freethinker, Freedom From Religion and Humanist Meetups as well as ones for Progressives and whatever. You will find more in the more densely populated areas. You could also try a Unitarian Universalist Church. They tend to be populated with liberal type people and amny Atheists, but they can vary widely in how "churchy" they feel.

3

Initiate a meet up group for free thinkers or join one in your area.

2

Create your meet up group.

2

Two Englishman at a diner in Montana and one asks the waitress "What would you recommend for my vegetarian friend?"
"I would recommend that your friend leaves Montana"

2

Probably there is a group of your region/state/country here, or in facebook, or in meetup or other aggregative social networks.

2

Same here. Blue in a Red State can be difficult.

2

Some communities have agnostic groups...sorta like AA. A Google search should yield nearest group.

2

I feel your pain....LOL I also live in a very repub/christian area here in Texas. There are quite a few members on the site from Colorado so perhaps some of them will contact you. Good luck.

2

Well, I'm not in your area.
But "like minded", perhaps
I's gladly strike up, or have a good conversation any time.
