The thing many seem to be missing in regards to the abortion issues we are seeing in many southern states is the fact too many women have not yet realized this NOT about abortion but the fact these men passing these laws still think and believe 50% of the population (women) in this country are not smart enough to make important decisions. It is about control and subjugation. Of course this is just my opinion, I could be wrong.

It's even bigger than that. It's about rolling the clock back on what they see as the "big liberal takeover" of America that began in the 1930s with FDR and Social Security. It's about rolling back all the affirmative-action programs that are just "keeping white people down" by opening up opportunities for communities that haven't actually had a chance to go to universities or get promoted, because the same 200 families have controlled basically everything for 250 years, and like it that way. And they sell it to middle-class whites because, instead of blaming the 200 families, they manage to sell it as being the fault of immigrants.

It's about returning to what they believe is the "original" America (one which never existed), an America of rugged individuals who never needed anything from anybody and went to church on Sunday, the days when we all came from right here in America and everyone got along with each other (except for the slaves, who didn't count, and the Irish, but they're just like us, really, ditto the Germans and the Poles and the Czechs and the French and of course we had to wipe out the Native Americans first...)

In other words, it's a fantasy and they're getting people to swallow it. "Because God."

It’s also about taking down the middle class. Educated people, who don’t have to worry about their day to day existence are more likely to upset the status quo.

@Haemish1 I agree. If you never have to depend on the safety net, you're much less eager to pay taxes that support it,

It's a lack of empathy for anyone that doesn't look like you and your neighbors; a lack of imagination, not thinking that there may come a time when you are the one who'll need health care or retirement assistance. And it's a willingness to blame the "other".

@Paul4747
I agree with what you’ve said, but I feel that this is the conservative backlash at the liberalism of the 60’s and 70’s that was largely the result of a prosperous, educated middle class that sought equality for all.

These people, both women and men have been brainwashed into believing its god’s will for every fertilised human egg to get born. If they get abortion stopped ...universally, across all 50 States that may just be the start. Will they then go a step further and outlaw contraception? They could ban the contraceptive pill for starters, that must be seen by them as artificially interfering with the fertilisation process. Yes, it’s control, and yes men are the instigators, these biblical types see themselves as patriarchs sowing the seeds of future generations, women are the mere chattels and handmaidens who receive and incubate these seeds. It is all very Old Testament, that is why they quote it so much. It is misogyny plain and simple, and the women they marry believe in it as much as they do, if you are conditioned from birth to believe something is true, it’s accepted without question.

It’s probably all of those plus a big dose of cultural identity. They relied on the Alabama governor (a woman) to make the important decision to sign the bill into law (which she did, unhesitatingly). The women of Alabama want this law as much or more than the men. I know these people. Many of them are my friends and family and neighbors. It’s life in the South. Culture. Identity.

I don't understand the legal situation in the USA but can a woman simply drive to another state and have an abortiion? I accept she should not have to. This the same situation as women in northern ireland have to deal with by getting a ferry to england.

Exactly...! But in future they will go over the border to the Rep. of Ireland.

I have lost track of the state . Dont know if it is passed but it makes travel to another state illegal.]

I think you are totally correct. It is a control issue for these men. Other than a strong religious conviction, can you explain why so many women support them. I find this hard to understand.

The women have been brainwashed into believing that they are doing god’s will.

You are not wrong...it is just one of the pieces of many...
