It really irks me when I see so many people -- young and old -- standing around in busy public spaces texting and totally oblivious to the world and people around them. It also bothers me when they sit on machines in a busy gym just texting and inconvenie4ncing others. Further, I really get angry when I see people driving cares while on their cell phones. They are so absorbed with themselves and their impersonal world that they are threatening the fabric and safety of our society.

I have never texted and never will. I will either call the person, meet with him or her face-to-face, or e-mail them

People have been doing similar even before mobile devices. Like all the idiots stopping in the middle of stairways to chat when I was in high school. The only kind of mobile tech people had then were pagers.

I agree - it would be nice if folks stood to one side and didn't keep walking or just stop walking while texting in public.

I've come close to ramming someone with a full cart of groceries when they just do the dead stop. lol Though I admit I find them amusing.

And I've used a phone in a store to locate my shopping partner more than once - but I don't then stay on the thing. (I'm there to shop.).

Texting in a car is egregious. I think losing a license for that offense would be great. People die from others doing it . It needs to stop.
And yes everyone thinks "I'm fine doing it - I've got GREAT reflexes" - No you don't.

Because people aren't allowed to exist in public spaces? Get over yourself.

You do you, but it sounds like youre in a lather most of the time. Wireless technology is here to stay, so either we figure out how to integrate it and make use of it, or we just have an even shittier life and do nothing.

I'm really hoping he uses a phone to access this site, but doubt it.

I constantly engage in real social interactions and in acquiring knowledge. But, texting is neither.

@wordywalt so? All the other people in the world are affected?

@wordywalt It’s possible to do both. Technology has greatly improved knowledge exchange and accessibility. Not all technology and change is bad.

@Burner Your point?

@CarolinaGirl60 I did not say that technology is bad. Don't out false words in my mouth. I use the internet daily for information. Texting is not seeking information.

@wordywalt Ok, if you say so. 🙄
But don’t put words in mine either...or rather, don’t tell me what I do/don’t and can/can’t accomplish with text, email, apps, e-readers, my Kindle, etc.

You admitted you don’t text. So respectfully: how do you know what texting can do?
For example, I can get an Uber, text a food order, text my doctors office, pay my rent...and let my daughter know I’m home safe(and vice versa), get notifications about flights, hotel reservations, various bills, bank account info that I set alerts for, and more.

@CarolinaGirl60 I do all of those things quickly and easily with the telephone or with the internet. except use Uber (I rarely need a taxi or ride service) I do not need to text

@wordywalt So don’t text. But why hate on those who do?
I don’t own a computer. I use my iPhone. I text. I’d rather text than talk! So shoot me, lol.

@CarolinaGirl60 I am not against texting per se. I am against the selfishly inconsiderate and senseless obsession with texting which see all too damned frequently.

@wordywalt my point was, "and, now where are you going with this?". It seemed like there would be some sort of "therefore, we need to do...." comment. I figured that you wanted to make proposal of some sort, about this very widespread problem, not just sulk. My bad.

A few months ago, I saw a woman pull into the middle of a 4 way stop, then stop her car there blocking traffic in all directions because she was so absorbed in her cell phone conversation.

Those inconsiderate bastards ignoring the strangers around them while sending messages to people they know. The fucking nerve of them.

Right, lol?!
I’m the kind of introvert who stares at my ringing phone in horror til it stops. Why aren’t they texting?😂

Exactly.

At the gym:

Me: "May I use that machine while you are using your phone?"

Most men say yes. A few jackasses insist they are resting between sets.

In Washington State, the new Distracted Driving Law takes effect July 23, 2019.

"The law forbids virtually all use of handheld gadgets such as phones, tablets, laptop computers and gaming devices while driving."

@ToolGuy did she walk away? and did her attitude change

Texting and driving or operating machinery is dangerous. Otherwise, it’s just inconvenient/inconsiderate sometimes, to those not partaking.
I’m very introverted, plus have several chronic illnesses. My connections to the world and family/friends is largely online, social media, text, emails. I don’t talk on the phone except when necessary or to a very few special people.
I’m 58; all this technology is new in my lifetime. I’m glad to have it, because without it, I’d be a hermit!

I think you are choosing to make your social connections more distant and impersonal.

@wordywalt Think what you want, that’s your right.
I know how much time and energy I have, and how I want to spend it. I’m fine with my connections and relationships.

I was at Wal Mart the other day, and every single aisle had a young woman parked in the middle of aisle screwing around on her cell phone. I literally couldn't get where I wanted to go because they had blocked every single aisle.
