What did you want to grow up and be as an adult when you were a pre -teen?

In 1964, I was 8 years old, I went to a Catholic school and there were three channels on TV. Westerns and John Wayne were all the rage. I ived in a blue collar row house in Baltimore. Among the "careers" that I believed were available for me were the following😟 don't laugh)
Cowboy
Busdriver
Priest
Policeman
Fireman
SteelWorker
Doctor
I really considered this and decided I was best suited to be a cowboy. How I imagined that is beyond me since I lived in the concrete jungle, never had a horse, never rode a horse.

What did YOU want to be?

Lol...you can still be a cowboy, at least ride a horse! ha ha

I wanted to be a flight attendant to travel...I travel a lot now and realize it would not have suited me at all.

I wanted to be a fashion designer...I sew and design costumes and make clothing now...

I wanted to be a teacher...I taught several courses in accounting and now I teach art classes.

I wanted to be President of the United States...uh, not happening, but I wish I had tried now...lol

@thinktwice, you are younger than many of the candidates, I will vote for you!!!!!

@Bigwavedave That is a job I would not want at this time...a beach chair is the only one I want to occupy now...with an umbrella drink and a good book...ha ha

@thinktwice thats what I am thinking,......

I didn’t really think about. I wanted to be a musician when I was 15 and tuned pro when I was 25. From there just followed the wind and worked out fine so far.

I wanted Jack Paar's job. Then I wanted to be Superman. None of that panned out, unfortunately.

An inventor. I've had conceptions I have yet to develop or 'reduce to manufacture' in technical terms.

Only aspiration I can recall is watching a TV show called "The Young Lawyers", and wanting to be a lawyer...otherwise just wanting to be Susan Dey's bf, et.al...

@seattlepanda..... yea she was a cutie eh?

I really didn't think about it.

I had dreams of being an astronaut all the way through high school until I learned that I was too tall (a 1/2 inch over their maximum) for shuttle missions. Had never considered a second choice until late in my teens.

You are so much older than I am; I was only 7 in '64, so I grew up in a completely different era. As we were at that time in the midst of the Space Race, I, of course, wanted to be an astronaut. Fortunately I did not pursue that career, as I would have washed out immediately due to the fact I am claustrophobic
Of course in the movies the astronauts were always floating around in big spacious rocket ships, not crammed into something the size of a garbage can.
I really don't remember what my second choice was, probably carny; not realizing at the time that all carnies are serial killers.

@stevewilbur yes, I was just 8, the spaceship thing was a bit later by a few years.

Follow up question, if Dave will forgive me for taking over his post--for those of you who didn't get their dream job, did you find a way to otherwise live that dream such as through volunteer work, hobby or personal study?

Bigwavedave, what DID you grow up to be?

Carin Level 8 June 7, 2019

@Carin, I was good at math and solving problems, so I went to school to be an engineer. I found I hated engineering, so I got an MBA . I learned that my passion was fun and experiences. I didnt want to save the world I wanted to see and experience it. The sights, wine , food , art etc. I went into sales. It has been a great career, very demanding, and stressful, but I got to work with people and make money and see the world.
