Are we, (The US,) engaged in a great civil war? It seems that polarization is getting wider and wider. How do we fight this war?
An old strategy to sell goods and products galore was to "create for the king an enemy." This has always worked well. In times of war you could even sell to both sides. This progresses into modern times with people selling Widgets and how everyone needs a widget and their widget is the absolute best. It makes you ask what happens when we have no more widgets? That is when you start confliction. Simply cause everyone to become conflicted. The result is that you have many different people believing many different things. If you sell your bill of goods properly some will always buy your product and may even be willing to fight others along the way. I'm not just talking car sales here or Facebook showing you pages you have recently viewed on the Internet. Let's take it deeper.
America is divided and conflicted. This happened to us because others wanted our money and also our support. The "products" being created are different models of how they think we would want our world to be. It made money, got some people killed, and also got people like Donald Trump elected. The left is as guilty as the right and once Trump is in power nobody knows exactly what to do any longer. The American Dream is dead. You might work 2 or more jobs and still think it is alive and well, but you are being taken in by both sides. Your conflict might be that you will not admit this. It has to be happening because of non-white and not entitled people. You might see that Donald Trump is not exactly right on things but he is close enough for you. You don't want to miss out. You want to make sure that "you get yours" and that it is not stolen by some unworthy group or person.
At the moment this is the state of America's new great civil war. The powers that be are not very civil. A wrong move here could bring this into a real warfare.
Contrary to popular belief, most people are centrist in their personal political ideology. All the polarization you see comes from small but loud minorities on the fringes of society. They get all the media coverage and of corse their message angers people so it spreads like a virus. The way you fight this is to turn off the news, ignore social media, and think critically about what you want and why. If more people did this, our two party system would collapse into 8 - 10, and the problem would disappear altogether.
Trumps strategy is divide and conquer. By demonising his opponents and singling out certain vulnerabilities amongst Democrats...e.g. racial and ethnicity issues which plays to the worst and basest of human instincts in his supporters, he is driving this polarisation. Don’t fall into the trap of retaliation, that will only increase the division between you and them. Only by engaging with Trump supporters will this divide be bridged...he is highlighting your differences, Democrats must emphasise what all Americans have in common and not demonise all those who vote Republican. You can only win them over to your way of thinking by dialogue and reason, they must be persuaded that Trump is harming the economy, the environment, and ultimately your standing and place in the world. An appeal to their own patriotism may be the only thing that they can understand.
First, I hate the term civil war as there is nothing remotely civil about war. But I understand the question. There is definitely a huge rift in our country...there are those that believe in the party and those that believe in the constitution. The only way to fight this is to be The change. First step is this next election. Become involved with politics, talk to people, ask them questions, ask them why they believe the way they do. Then step up and take people who have no transportation to the polls.
>Become involved with politics, talk to people, ask them questions, ask them why they believe the way they do.
That pisses them off. You see the Internet discussion groups divide up between those who have a set of opinions that they all agree on. Woe be to those who disagree with that group.
@WonderWartHog99 not if it’s done in person. Do not discuss to change minds, discuss to learn.
@Namaste I've been told to go to hell in person. Discuss to learn? I've learned.
