MBreaking newsflash here in the U.K. A British flagged Oil Tanker has been seized by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in the Persian Gulf. The owners of the Stena Impero, which was bound for Saudi Arabia, say they have been unable to contact the vessel and it is heading north towards Iran.
The British Foreign Office says it is “urgently “ looking into the reports.
New information is that there are 23 crew members aboard, and are likely to be nationals of many different countries.
We now know that the crew of this Stena Line ship which is Swedish owned, but British flagged, and who are reported to be unharmed are ...Indian, Russian, Latvian and Filipino.

@AnneWimsey The Iranians have admitted it and given reasons why they are holding the ship. You do know, not everything is a false report, I have not yet reached the stage of disbelief in every news story...but in any case there is enough corrobatory evidence coming from the ship owners to believe that it was a retaliatory strike because the Iranians own tanker was seized at Gibraltar for contravening EU embargo on supplying oil to Syria. They warned us last week that shipping in the Gulf would be targeted.

Perhaps the ships should be armed or defended by the British military. We no longer have a navy to rule the waves, so the UK should provide letters of Marke/Marque/Marqe. It is a terrible shame that people are likely to get killed in this affair.

Such a surprise! As this has been brewing for a while. I wonder did they have the similar sorts of anti pirate measures that were employed against Somali pirates? Of course the Red Sea is only slightly safer, but really? We're shocked and stunned at this international 'tit for tat'?

The Royal Navy dud step in last week to protect a tanker ....I don’t know why there were no escorts today.
@Marionville There was an RN ship in the area, but it was 10 miles away. I think that this was a well timed strike.
@Pompey yes...I heard a recorded radio message on the news today when the RN warned the Iranians not to try to board but they were too far away to intervene. They had tried the same thing last week but the Navy were closer and they backed off.
So, what goes around, comes around, huh?

Trump knows that America is financially incapable of supporting it's poor and has a shit economy based on bullshit, they can't afford to wage a war with Iran but are trying to engage them by drawing European countries into his madness in challenging them! Yes....but the Iranian tanker was breaking an EU embargo to supply oil to Syria. It was unconnected to the imposition of US sanctions...but not the way the Iranians see it obviously. The Iranian ship is in Gibraltar being held under EU law. This has all been triggered by Trump withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal...fuck him!
@Marionville Yes I am aware of that, but I'm sure the Iranians couldn't care less about EU sanctions. Assad is a nasty bastard but he is the elected president of Syria fighting a bunch of rebels some backed by the USA. The EU are probably just following orders from Washington. Lots of double standards here.
