In light of the Dayton, El Paso shootings, I expected this site to be inundated with emotionaly-based, anti-gun sentiment that demands the "Universal Background Checks" or, in the very least, condemnation of the NRA, and "Common Sense Gun Laws."

By your stated opinion, you should not mind if you get shot and maimed or killed tomorrow, and should not feel any emotion about that.
Overly unregulated gun ownership is the proven cause of gun violence in America, & not any other cause can be used to justify so many guns being owned by Americans. No interest in argument here. It should be obvious that if you don't want yourself or those you love to die by gun violence, then get on board with gun regulation.

Assault rifles do not belong in the hands of general public where nut jobs can own just them they are too easy to use for mass casualties and like the AK easy to use by novices

We had a ban on assault weapons (semi automatic rifles and pistols) in the 90's. It was proven to be constitutional as it was never able to be overturned though they tried several times. It expired in 2004 with many attempts to reinstate by dems but mostly refused by repubs and those who could be bought by the NRA. I, for one, am tired of mass killings. Mortified that a large portion of this country doesn't seem to care about innocent people getting killed and use bullshit talking points such as "anti-gun sentiment". I'm hoping the time has come to reinstate the assault weapons ban.

...and why should emotions amount to punitive retribution, like 9-11..?

Actually, the ban and forced confiscation of military style assault weapons and their accompanying ammo & body armor would/ will be a quicker partial solution. More strategic bans may take place after you’ve determined we’ve had sufficient time to pray & mourn ~

@dahermit We've discussed it to death this year. There have been so many Mass Shootings that folks have a form of PTSD from it and are trying not to poke the wound.

Search the topic - you'll see we all talked about it.
A ton of us have contacted our Representatives too.

Heck there's a group dedicated to this discussion.

Don't add more shaming to an issue we aren't in control of kindly. We're already stressed to the max and grief stricken!

I've been watching members mark themselves "safe" from these events all year - many of us are having anxiety attacks while we wait for news of people we care for.

Yes we care. Almost all want the NRA gone and reasonable gun laws passed and enforced.

Just the opposite. Kindly consider the facts. In one case there were armed people and they took down the shooter in 50 seconds. On the other scene there were not, and the shooter just kept killing.
We need to arm more citizens!

@GodlessMimi Facts remain facts.

If you look on FB you can find plenty of "reliable news sources" that wil break it down and will agree with everything you say, and will allude to the massive emotional outpouring of the libtard gun grabbers. You won't find it here though, because TCF (the Clinton foundation) has already scoured this site, and taken those posts down and replaced them with petty infighting about atheist vs agnostic, so that we will all forget about the big issues and accept whatever pablum the dems shove down our throats.

Fine. I'm happy to condem the gun manufactures mouthpiece organization, the NRA, an organization that long ago stopped representing gun owners and thier rights. The organization that's blocked any and all real measures that would actually help instead of hinder, who's distorted through fear and obtustification what it means to be a responsible gun owner in service to those who make and sell firearms.

Fuck the NRA.

Okay I'll start it off. As a gun owner myself, please pass rational gun ownership law. How may thousands of deaths and maiming need to take place before we come to our senses. Remove the NRA's 501 c 3 tax status.

"... pass rational gun ownership law." That is just a platitude. Just what features of a gun law are you proposing? Or, do you think platitudes are rational arguments?

@dahermit Well common sense background checks for one. If you're on a terrorist list or mentally unstable maybe you shouldn't be packin. All ownership should be registered. Automatic assault weapons should be outlawed. If you're caught circumventing the law there should be stiff penalties.

@NoPlanetB How likely is the Second Amendment to be repealed? Other than that, your post exhibits the logical fallacy of using personal experience to justify your position. In other words, the fact that you have owned and used guns all your life, is not a logical argument.

@dahermit The 40,000 deaths a year and untold maiming of out citizens call for it. The second amendment does not rationalize unlimited gun ownership. Nor does it rationalize certian law makers being bought off by the NRA.

@dahermit, @NoPlanetB

Some things need to be kept in mind. One, the second amendment is about arms, not just guns. So it applies equally to guns as it does to tanks as it does to missiles. Under the current paradigm of "no prohibitions on arms," If some multi-billionaire wanted to buy missiles, but US law prohibited such, then surely SCOTUS would have to strike down that law.

Two, checking for indication of mental illness is a good idea, but that won't always be in any records. It might not have been diagnosed at all, or noticed, or written down anywhere. So, I would suggest an actual psych evaluation at the time of purchase of both weapon and ammunition. It would not have to be something thorough, but something that would give some indication. Also could be done (more thoroughly) periodically for registererd owners.

@bingst Yes, it could include a more through testing. You have to take a written and hands on test in order to get a drivers license, you need written and on average 40 hours flight time to get your pilot license. You have to be licensed for many functions why not gun ownership? The NRA that's why.
