Who else has been watching The Handmaid’s Tale? I try to take hope and inspiration from the women who resist, even though it’s fiction...I could imagine a Gilead led by extremist evangelicals.
Just this week a woman who had a stillborn was jailed. Abortion rights are being constantly challenged and attacked. Could a Gilead happen here?
After this show, you should all check out the netflix series The Family.
I plan to, it looks interesting!
I watched it. I also read the book back when it first came out. Then re-read it when the show came out. And yes, it feels like this is beginning to happen here in real time. It's quite terrifying, actually. The Talivangelists would love it, wouldn't they?
I tried to re-read when the show came out, and I couldn’t. It’s too possible!
I read the book many years ago and thought then and now it could happen here.
I read the book many years ago and it scared the shit out of me. I am old enough to remember the years before Roe V Wade and the battle it took to get it. I remember self-induced abortions and back-alley abortions and scraping up $ to help someone get one. They want to take us back to those days and we must NOT go back! Resistance is the only option.
Yes...I am watching,,.although I may be a bit behind you guys in the episodes. It’s all very scary stuff, and I’m afraid I do see certain parallels happening, especially in the USA.
@StarvingArtist Yes...get these Bible bashers out of office, before fact really does imitate fiction!
@StarvingArtist So a glimmer of hope you feel?
Want to get real-world scared? Google "Street Scene (any middle eastern capital) 1962". See women in chic western garb driving, enjoying outdoor cafes, etc......now, burkas or stoning to death...the Tale is based on Reality!
Well we've got a republican politician who seems to think that rape and incest is just fine, so unless we all make a lot of noise about these things that are actually being said and done, then yes, some version of Gilead could actually happen. That's why we have these warnings that seem unreal, until they seem possible unless we act. I've only seen the first season, so far, not the latest, but that was enough to make an impression on me. Scary!
