Why are so many Catholic priests pedophiles? In my opinion, the priesthood tends to attract immature men who are running from their sexuality and from the responsibilities that maturity foists upon us all as we age. By becoming priests, these men can "legitimately" move in an ostensibly all-male environment while never having to worry about paying off a mortgage, meal preparation, housekeeping, job security, home repairs, child rearing, maintaining adult loving relationships, obtaining health insurance, etc. My goodness, even their funerals are planned, bought and paid for by the Church! It's no surprise to me that these men in flight from full adulthood might also be stuck in an infantile place sexually. In its prudishness (as manifested in the so-called celibacy requirement for priests) and in its misogyny, the Church ensures that psychologically unhealthy individuals sign up to be priests and nuns. In the meantime, these damaged clergy do a huge disservice to the LGBTQ community by serving up to the public the dangerous and faulty impression that all gay men are pedophiles.
