Socialism no longer scares people. Has the word lost its power to scaremonger? [twitter.com]
About freakin' time, but just yesterday there was an extensive post here equating Communism with Socialism, and quoting (wait for it!) Lenin as their authority! To which I replied, "WTF is wrong with you?", of course.....
It still works in the deep south and gets used quite frequently in discussions.
The right has just come to power with a vengeance in the US, it is bound to generate a counter reaction, which will make the left seem like salvation for a while. But you have to remember that the right swing was itself a reaction to a growing left wing domination of the political establishment. What you have to hope for, among the pendulum swings of reaction and counter reaction, is that the pendulum will one day settle around a consensus, because if the opposite happens, and the swings get ever wider, that way leads to madness and the end of civilizations.
@ToolGuy Yes that is true and a good idea. But even then you have to be careful, you have to remember that the reason why Hitler and the Nazis came to power, from being a tiny party with just three percent of the vote, was because the large socialist party was just three percent short of the votes it needed to form a majority government. So they needed a partner with three percent, and the rest is history.
The Left, as I have long said, need to neutralize the power of the Right to wield this word as a weapon by flinging back with assertions about corporate socialism, military socialism, industry socialism, business socialism, and all the other forms of socialism that are acceptable to the Right, namely transfer of resources to things they like, whether useful or justified. People will get to see that the only socialism the Right objects to is socialism for the benefit of the majority of the population who create the damn wealth in the first place through their hard work. I think this is getting through now.
