"Not pro-life, not pro-choice, no-choice"
Worse Than Abortion? (The Bible Wins Again)
[patheos.com]
Personally, I absolutely believe it is a personal choice made by oneself or with the family. Certainly, not a choice made by the church and especially not elected officials. I was reading some sections of the Talmud. It was and I think still is (to a point) believed by the Jewish leaders that there are 3 stages of existence: (1) embryo - a sack of liquid cells akin to a cyst (2) Fetus - cells being literally a part of a woman's body, not a separate entity. (3) Human - birth or being outside of the woman's body. So, I understand, as far as they are concerned, if a woman's life is at stake, abort...if a fetus is found to have a disease or be malformed in some way...the perceived cyst can be aborted, if so desired. But once in labor or in delivery, then the fetus is considered "human" but without a soul, until life is breathed into it...then abortion is not allowed - So at that point, the "thou shall not kill" comes into play. Um, maybe that is why it is #6 on the list of do's and do not's.
I'm not Jewish, but it's my understanding that the Talmud states that the new life begins AFTER birth when the baby takes its first breath.
@BitFlipper Yes, you are right and that is what I wrote...but agreed I did not make clear the part once in labor or in delivery...there are extreme cases a pause on that thought is taken. It gave an example that if a pregnant woman is being executed by law the jailers do not have to wait for the birth to execute the woman...however, if the fetus is moving down the birth canal (ie as in last stage labor) - they will give it time to be born, then execute the woman. When the head has come out then and only then is it considered an actual "person or nefesh". At that point, the baby cannot e harmed.
@Maximai makes sense to me.
The Bible has all sorts of ridiculous stories and rules that most people have never heard. It’s why reading the Bible from cover to cover will make most people atheists!
