So, Ive had two family members share their testimony about recieving prophecy. I remember this when i was young and a traveling revivalist would prophecy over members of the congregation.

Since then I basically forgot about it due to that revivalist only stopping by one other time. That was 20 years ago. Just recently I had a cousin that told me about another guy that would do the same thing. First they give very specific details like, "you live on johnson street, right?" And of course they would be right. Then say "you have a child, the holy spirit is telling me tyler?" And they would be right again. Then they go on a tirade of words of encouragement that sounds like prophecy. My cousin gave me a youtube link.

Even more recent my dad got the same thing at another church in another state by a different person. Same setup.

I told my cousin that this no different when mediums talk to people thay have died. Its called a cold reading, or something they get your personal info first then come in a read you as if it was from god.

So i sent her back some links of mediums doing reading so they could see that uncanny parallels. Its the same show different vernacular.

I now want to go after this prophetic style an expose them. There is even a school for it.

What are your thought? Has anyone else dealt with this?

The classic answer to this of course is that the believer claims "Oh that is just a Satanic mockery of a genuine miracle, what happened to me was REAL"
I've done cold reading of people on stage as part of an act years ago, and so when my sister in law was talking about this very subject I cold read her, she sat with her mouth open, gobsmacked, and told me I had "the gift" how could I possible know these things?
Then I explained that first and foremost I knew them BECAUSE SHE WAS MY SISTER IN LAW!
People who want to believe are so freaking gullible it is incredible.

I voted for “leave it alone”, not because I don’t think they should be exposed, but because people that believe in these things will continue believing even after the expose. Why? Because of deep ignorance, or because it is part of their culture, or because they need to believe they have some kind of advantage over regular life (fear and low self-esteem). So, exposing becomes a waste of time, unfortunately.

The wealthy and their corporations use religion to control our ethnic, racial, and cultural groups by divide and conquer technics!

Pro life groups, pacs, and think tanks to guide us into their web of deceit and fraudulent control!

Fake prophet and their prophecies.

Which is not hard to do, considering there's no real prophets.

They sound like s pain.

Give me Aunty Joan’s tea leaves any day. At least they are quite accurate and she doesn’t want me to take up my tea cup and walk hand in hand with her to the bookies. A packet of fags is about right!

Leave it alone. You can’t fix stupid. Particularly when the persons whole identity is bound up in the stupidity.

haha...well said!

Leave it alone! You can’t teach people something that they are unwilling to learn!

I wonder who they're getting these messages from 🤔. They seem to know everyone personally including their personal problems and vulnerabilities 🤣

Facebook, Twitter, People search online used to be the phonebook.

The electoral roll probably!

My cousin was a mega evanglist in training in the 80's. His wife read the prayer request via a wire as i understand it. He was the most gifted speaker I have ever known. When he spoke of god it was unbelieveable the power he had. He was a super, mega religious man...while preforming. He NEVER even spoke of god, in fact the subject annoyed him when he was not "working." Yep it was just a job to him. One that made him rich. When Peter Popoff got busted for doing the same thing he suddenly quit and then started a designer condom store in Houston. Go figure.

There was a caller on the Atheist Experience Sunday who asked if they would become believers if he revealed a specific prophesy that was revealed to him. After several minutes of vague discussion, he finally said he couldn't reveal the specific prophecy NOW. He was just saying there was a specific prophesy that WOULD soon happen to him, and after it did happen, he would tell them it happened and then they could become believers.

I sometimes wonder how stupid people are, or how stupid they think everyone else must be.

I saw that episode. 😂😂😂

James Randi exposed televangelist Peter Popoff who was using an earpiece to receive information about audience members from his wife. The information was gathered while people waited in line including their seat number, their ailments, and other facts about them. The information was turned over to Mrs. Popoff who would transmit the information to Popoff's earpiece who would make it appear that he was getting information from God about who to heal and all sorts of i fo about the individual. Randi had equipment to scan radio frequencies until he picked up the one the Popoff's were using to scam their audience.

It's a business like any other 😉

We went to a Buddhist Temple in China and we had a similar thing happen. We had a private session with a monk but I couldn’t understand what he was telling my Chinese wife. She gave him some money and they gave us 3 incense sticks about 3 ft long. We walked outside and they lit our incense and my wife, my daughter, and I held it in our palms and we’re suppose to pray. I looked around and I seen some people doing the same but their incense was bigger and longer than ours. Afterward I asked my wife what he said. She said he was basically prophetsizing about us. Sounded like a cold reading. An American man with a Chinese wife and daughter. I see you traveling in the future and you will have a lot of changes. Hmmmm, that’s hard to guess! Hey, why did we have smaller incense than those other guys? She says we didn’t give him enough money! Blew my mind that they were so much like the churches in America! Bullshit and money!

Yip like George Carlin says - BS and Money 👍

When my Grandfather was dying on his death bed he promised that he will return and make our family rich, Of course my Grandfather has a better chance of returning than does Jesus.

Feed them to the sharks.
Figuratively, of course.

I was going to disagree, but you are correct, they might make the sharks sick

Sure. Expose them. Have fun with it.

James Randi has made a lifelong career of exposing charlatans. You would be in good company.
