Teenager "blind" from living off crisps and chips.
"Dr Atan said vegans are also at increased risk of B12 deficiency-related sight problems if they do not replace what they can lack when excluding meat from their diet."

just noticed an update. they're now saying his blindness was exacerbated by excessive masturbation.
I have a feeling his vitamin deficiencies were much more wide spread that simply B12. The kid didn't eat any vegetables or fruits or healthy nutritious food at all...just overly processed foods like white bread and potatoes in the form of chips and fries. He was experiencing bone loss...at such a young age. Pretty shocking. (And vegans are usually pretty educated about their nutrition...so this situation really has little to do with veganism being 'risky'.)
The vegan comment relating to B12 was merely a cautionary extract from the entire BBC article, as NOT ALL vegans are well educated about their diet. I know some who simply refuse to eat anything meat related and have blind faith in "vegetables".
Perhaps you did not bother to read the article.
@mojo5501 True. What is the vegan attitude to insects?
In Kenya I often ate the abdomens (raw) of flying ants, which swarm after the rains. These, it appears, are an excellent source of B12. Perhaps they were the main source of B12 for our ancestors? (Flying ants are male termites, which grow wings.) [sciencedirect.com]
Ohferpetessake, I bet his teeth are all loose too, but he needs to be institutionalized & helped (and maybe his family brought up on neglect/abuse charges!
Horrendous that parents allowed him to get to that stage. Children can’t be allowed to limit their diets to such a degree, there is a parental duty to adequately nourish their children.
Unfortunately, unlearned parents can take the easy route and believe that as long as he's eating and not losing weight, then everything is acceptable.
@Petter Sadly true.
