I'm troubled when I hear people say that we need to "respect" people's religious beliefs. Perhaps it would be better to use the word "tolerate" (with the proviso that those beliefs are not foisted on others or used politically).

"Respect" connotes admiration or agreement, and I certainly don't admire or agree with any adult believing in fairy tales--- unless that person is certifiably insane.

No one can force me to respect the obviously so ridiculous to me. Yes, I do tolerate everyone, being stupid is our birth right. Respect?? Never!

Definition 1 - what I consider RESPECT....I have respect for very few people ... I have to meet, get to know and then feel they are accomplished and worthy
Tolerance is a freebie I give almost everyone, unless they show they are not worthy ... then I avoid them / ensure they avoid me.

definitions of respect
noun

  1. a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements.
  2. due regard for the feelings, wishes, or rights of others.
    verb
1 admire (someone or something) deeply, as a result of their abilities, qualities, or achievements.
  3. have due regard for (someone's feelings, wishes, or rights).

In terms of rational debate, argument, etc. , it doesn't make sense to respect any idea, really. Everything should be questioned, as much as possible, and only truth taken as true. We can base our beliefs in logic, but logic cannot extend past what language can express, and can only be rooted in more language, we also need a framework and base of the actual, in all its material aggregates, in all its knowledge of reality. If we're going to believe truly, and get a foothold in our reality, we need sensibility.

We can reason that a lot of our culture and economy depends on religion, but that's really not progressive.

I respect your right to feel that way, but I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. lol

Thank you , Thank you, Thank you for a helpful clarification for one of my own conundra (conunumdrums)

Since a religious belief can be literally anything, to say you should tolerate or respect it in advance is simply writing a blank cheque. I may respect, tolerate or condemn a belief depending on what it is - religious or otherwise.

I would go a step further and say that I choose to tolerate their beliefs until the time arises that those beliefs encroach upon my personal choices / freedom. In my opinion, no person is under any obligation to 'respect' anyone else's existence.

Did ‘anyone else’ choose to be here or did the ‘force of life,’ put them here? Not, respecting ‘anyone else’s existence,’ feels like a low blow! Being with the living, is not an ideology.

@Freedompath All I would try to offer every other living being is my utmost effort to not meddle in their life unless absolutely necessary. I wouldn't peg someone to be worthy of 'respect' just because they exist. Respect would be for those whose actions / deeds make their existence worthy of it.

@DSGavde but the human condition itself is not all known...certain behaviors I can not respect in a person...but his humanity, that I would respect. We can’t all ‘jump through hoops’ trying to prove our worth, especially if you came from a culture that could not instruct acceptable behaviors! And what about ‘acceptable norms,’ of different cultures? The ‘human being’...first, then his behaviors. that is what I have adjusted myself to accept and until I have evidence to the contrary...that will be my position.
If I found a person suffering, I would not first filter it through can I respect this person...I would give aid, and leave it with that!

@Freedompath None of us made a conscious choice of being born human so I don't see why 'humanity' as a characteristic of a living being deserves that special respect. Standards set by a society for its members is what you would term as acceptable norms? Cross culture comparison is sure to have differences sometimes pronounced. As a principle, I would be indifferent to every other existing being until exposure to them changes that.

@DSGavde Good luck!

I need to respect the person not his/her ideas, and religion is just a bunch of ideas and do not deserve special treatment.
people have rights ideas don't.

BUT......

Some people were indoctrinated since childbirth and the religion is a cornerstone on their sense of self so disrespecting religion for them feel like a personal insult as religion IS part of their sense of self.

1

You might call it a matter of syntax. I might say, "in all due, 'respect,' I disagree with your post." So I am not saying you are an idiot. I may admire you for many other things you have said or for a particular authority you may have on the subject.

Good point...I agree that "tolerate" is a better word.

I Respect to all the Right to worship or waste their time as they feel fit.

1

I think people should be respected. I think erroneous ideas should be criticized sharply, loudly and frequently.

If a fad developed where you put your children in the middle of traffic to play, would you be respectful of that idea?

I don't like spitting on sidewalks.
I don't like seeing buttcrack above your trousers.
I don't like religion.

And I won't respect those things either.

1

I direct my respect at the person, not the person's beliefs. I respect people's right to believe what they wish, and I sometimes discuss beliefs and try to persuade them toward reality. But even if they ignore me and continue believing that myths are real, I continue to respect them as persons.

1

Do I have to respect people that believe in ancient aliens and Bigfoot too? What about some guy who thinks monkeys fly out of his ass at night? A god fits right in there with the other crazy and I won’t respect any of it. It’s stupid. It does not deserve respect. I can tolerate people being crazy as long as they remain silent about it. Bring your crazy to the public and then I have the right to publicly ridicule it.

HEY! Are we arguing respect v tolerate? I have often seen (and used) them interchangeably, depending on context. Can't very intelligent people find a better subject for disputation? When one respects something, (s)he is respecting it's right to exist.

Tolerant is all we can be.

I see the need for this post. I do not like the thought of tolerating for ever and a day. At some time in the distant future I would hope that our arguments please everyone. Until that day religions will not give up. If YOU had divine inspiration would you? Is there a word for an none aggressive " I am working to take over your ideas with better ones for all of Humanity? My choice would be "Humanist". Of course I am NOT yet saying which arguments will please everyone over any aim.
