Something to remember when bashing christianity ?
My late partner grew up during the Shah. They thought he 'was' repressive but she had friends and neighbors from all faiths. Even though her family were Moslem (light) her mother encouraged her to question (she was the only daughter with 4 brothers). She always thought religion was silly but when the revolution she saw what it can do to a country. Even though she had a rough marriage she said she had to thank her husband for getting her out of Iran because with her mouth she would either be in jail or dead. Every time she went to visit her family everyone was on pins and needles because she flaunted the rules.
This is religion and all religions are able to commit atrocities.
I can’t really see the reason to bring Christianity into this debate regarding Iran. This is not a Muslim rule that women can’t attend football matches, or have to wear head coverings...it’s purely a law which has been introduced since the 1979 revolution in Iran and which is being enforced by the Revolutionary Guards who police Iran. It’s easy, but very incorrect, to equate certain cultural practices in Muslim countries with being Islamic, but there are also quite liberal Muslim countries where none of these restrictive practices occur. Using this example to compare with Christianity is misleading, your inference is that compared to Islam..Christianity isn’t too bad, so stop the “bashing”. Well, I say we are in as much danger from the evangelical Christian Right and their rolling back of women’s rights, and denial of the rights of the LGBT community, as we are from Islam at this present time.
Good points
Iran was once a liberal country as far as religion goes but it has changed. I really see the sanctions placed on Iran by our scofflaw dictator as exacerbating religions hold. I think the link is that the fundamentalists support for tRump may very well make things just as bad for us.
ugh, thanks for reminding me of the reason ive tried to block the "religion and spirituality" forum from my feed. And why i shouldnt just click on links thinking the are news/politics, if the person who posted them didnt give at least a little information about what they posted and why.
i understand the fascination with the horribleness of religion, but posting example after example, and calling it news, feels more like sitting in the lunchroom in middle school and making fun of the kids who are worse off. THe DD kids, the kids from the poor school down the street, the kids in the wrong clique...
I get that. And I didn't mean to raise anyone's hackles. I posted and asked a question. Sometimes I too seek answers/ clarity. Opinions. Thoughts. NBD
