Today I heard from a very religious family member that you are very miserable and have no reason to live without the Christian god. Why? The Bible tells her so. Essentially, our emotions are invalid, because an old and revered book says so.

We live in a meaningless world or at least a world that doesn't provide a definitive answer to the meaning of life. However, this seems as an inherent question to the human experience.

This lead to what is known as existential anxiety, the dissonance between the human need for purpose and a indifferent world. We all struggle with this fact and have invented many ideologies to combat this feeling.

Christianity, one such ideology, posits to authoritatively provide us with the answer to this question.

The combination of this existential angst coupled with the wrongly perceived legitimacy of christianity leads to assumptions such as this person made.

I have that same thing, but with beer and coffee.

Other holy books say your family member deserves death because he/she holds to the Bible and not their relic religious book. So much for holy books.

Have you ever heard the term, “existential angst”? I think people of faith, most faiths, have been living a life that was taught to them as children by people they trusted. AKA, indoctrination. Having one’s fundamental life’s beliefs challenged, causes an angst that threatens their very foundation.

The good news is you have a far better understanding of our home (earth), and how we got here. Take joy in that and enjoy your time here. It’s good to be a skeptic. "The unexamined life is not worth living" Socrates

I think I have many more possibilities, and possible “reasons to live,” without any god getting in the way.

Beer?

@Paul4747 That works!

Best response to that might be some kindly indulgent laughter. Don't argue just demonstrate with conspicuous cheer that whoever put such a daft interpretation on those muddled old pages cannot possibly be correct.

Who is your family member talking about? You or someone else.

It was a comment made in a Bible study, which I attended. I'm still under the guise of being just an agnostic.

1

Are you miserable?

Very. I don't know what I was thinking!! Lol

@Biblebeltskeptic snap out of it!

Ask her if she also watched Fox News.

Stone the Crows Mate, ANYTHING put out by Wrinkley Rupert Turdoch and Fox News would be more than enough to send anyone over the edge wouldn't it?

@Triphid Yep. There's a reason why it's banned in other countries.

I'd go "Nah, I'm actually quite happy without all that mumbo jumbo. Thanks for thinking of me though." And make a speedy exit.

Religion ruins family more often than sexual preference does.

Both reasons are ridiculous.

Well then, I done screwed that up cuz I'm in a good mood usually am. 😁

However, I'm happy believing in leprechauns.
Who is to say? 🤔

I'm fine without God. Lake away my vodka and I'm devastated.

Vain threats mirror her own insane ignorant misery she wants to inflict upon all Atheists who are happy and sane having read the filthy misogynistic genocidal King James bible to conclude the alleged geebush jeehobah ghostholes is best laughed away like Thor Apollo Zeus Aphrodite and the volcano gawds

Everyone is entitled to believe whatever they want and it should be fine for as long as they don't pass any judgement onto somebody else.....

@Rob48 I've said my peace on this matter

@Rob48 Shit, in my 60+ years as an Atheist NEVER once have I met or known a truly miserable Atheist.
Usually, when troubles, etc, come along we do get a bit 'down' but eventually we pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, find a reason to smile once more and start all over again and do it ALL without the need for an Imaginary, Invisible Sky dwelling friend.
