Hey friends … someone I’d thought was cool appears not to be.. Dang
So, if you responded to the following below, and want me to know - let me know here..
Been here about two years now, points mean little to me ..as the opportunity to meet and encourage like-minded folks remains paramount. But when the site becomes either cluttered or polluted with serial posts … giving little more than a one-sentence (if that) lead-in, with seven in a row … It’s going to dissuade both viewers and new participants..
The topic’s been brought up before, and a simple ‘so many per day’ limit would stop the abuse, but it continues. Don’t know if it’s a ‘points thing,’ boredom, anger, or simply a careless disregard for the site in general - but it struck me as too much this morning … so I responded with the following … to a ‘level 9’ dude who’s apparently ‘Blocked me.’ The Blocking’s fine ..at least I won’t have to wade through it … but you will
My comment/s (let me know what you think):
“Unrelated to whatever the topic here - though I appreciate your mindset … serial posts weaken this site. There needs to be a posting limit per day - As I count seven in a row - nothing but ‘links’ - my fear is the audience you seek and the members we want will be turned off and turned away.”
It is very annoying when people post links to articles with little to no commentary to go with them. It's one thing to put in a link to back up the point that you are making in your post or to provide further information but to have the link be the center piece of your whole post is just lazy and it doesn't actually communicate any information to anyone. It just conditions people to ignore you. It feels like you are giving me a reading assignment.
And then if you comment without doing the entire reading assignment they will say "did you even read the article?!.
Exactly. It’s been awhile now, and without viewing the clutter and repetitiveness of a few cereal posters (though I’ll never know if they’ve moved on) ..it’s been nice!
...as I’d nearly forgotten about my semi-rant above thus reread it, I should make clear that, to me - a post is beginning a topic thread - not responding to those of others.. You’d got that, and thanks for responding ~
@Varn I reread my comment and realized that I referred to a comment as a post and them corrected it.
It seems like a good idea to clean the clutter but I have a strict no block policy. I see it as a last resort, only to be used when being harassed.
@RoboGraham Yes, Post vs Comment, that’s the two..
I’d gone years, literally, not blocking anyone, but after bringing this to the attention of a couple ..abusers, decided to try. The first blocked me, the second was of my choosing. I may use it more often
@Varn I'm considering blocking someone who has been saying some very inappropriate things and behaving like a cowardly bully. If he continues with the name calling and perverted comments I may do it.
Blocked my first ..user…. It’s been such a treat not wading through cereal posts (from the one who inspired this post) ..that I just had to do this, for me.
As for those new to the platform … I’m sorry, I’ve tried to limit your exposure to point-addicted cereal-posters, but failed
Note to Admin - if you ever place a limit on daily posts - let me know, I will happily ‘unblock’ the person I blocked ~
Ohferpetesake...I like most others have limited time, so we respond to whatever interests us in as little time as possible, then go back to our lives. Limiting us to "one post an hour"??? I would never bother to come here at all...you would have a site for shut-ins only!
I like most others,’ too In fact, if this dude were my neighbor - we’d likely have a blast going on (and on) about the state of the nation!
Three posts per 24 hour period should be plenty. Then they could share their knowledge and experience by responding to the posts of others. ‘ell, I don’t post one a month! Not that I don’t have anything to say
i am annoyed at the same behavior... but also one more.... so if there is a post with a question... someone seeking information or experiences.... i can't stand the people who respond, "i don't know." or 'I've never gone through this." that is a total NON answer.
Agreed, what’s the point to that.. I rarely post, not trying to starve any ‘followers’ ...but consider everyone’s time valuable. A number of little things bother me, too ..like how bout those who ask a question or post a concern, we spend twenty minutes responding ...then silence.. Not even a little ‘thumb up’ (or down) for our effort.
You learn who to skip, and I’ve not blocked anyone… but it’s newbies I’m concerned with; noticing two people posting 75% of a page … with nothing but ‘links.’ How’s that strike them? ...and those ‘links’ ..taking us to pop-up ads, pay-walls, lead-on pieces, cookies.. Or who knows where?
Love the links where the poster gives their opinion, then list a series of “quotes” from the piece relevant to their concerns. That’s cool! We can follow up on those, or go to the piece itself. But just a crude three-word comment followed by ‘a link,’ is just plain lazy. Seven in a row is abusive ~
@Varn Agreed. I also saw a post in response to yours (obviously). The post said that they didn't want to feel forced into reading 5,000 words.... I wanted to comment, you don't have to read everything on the alert list... but i really cannot get into one more back and forth with an annoyed member. I have little energy and cannot afford to spend my energy on nonsense. Use the site like you wish - including declaring annoyance when you are feeling it.
I like many posts... All things interesting...
And there is a limit in place.. One post per group per hour... Otherwise, notifications won't go out
@NoPlanetB and did you get many replies when posting in the same group minutes apart... Check on that
Not doing groups, but appreciative of the diversity of the main board, there appears to be no limit … thus my annoyance and concern
It’s not the flavor of the posts, it’s the obsessive number. It’s the fact, all they are is ‘a link,’ lacking personal opinion in both the lead-in and follow ups (if any)... The Net’s full of news services, so simply transferring and piling them up ‘here’ is of little value..
