Just found this cool website and it explains about atheist/ agnostic/ theist/ nostic. Thought Iโd share:
[learnreligions.com]
Someone posted this same thing, verbatim, recently.
"Atheism is about belief or, specifically, what you don't believe.
An atheist doesn't believe in any gods. Agnosticism is about knowledge or, specifically, about what you don't know.
An agnostic doesn't know if any gods exist or not. Itย is common for people to be both agnostics and atheists or agnostics and theists."
... and many people had a bird over it, arguing it was making untrue assertions.
Now it's getting the "thumbs up" from some of the same people who argued against it.
People are very confused and confusing.
If you want to know what a Gnostic believes then read a book about the subject & see if the 'shoe fits'.
Agnosticism is the belief in a god but the nature of the god is unknown, hidden, unrevealed. Agnostos Theos.
Atheism in ancient Greece was viewed as, 'the abandonment of god(s)'. "My god, my god, why has thou forsaken me." JC was an atheist!
Thatโs really cool @CallMeDave the above link is about being spiritual, but not religious
Very interesting. The word Gnostic intrigue me so I looked it up [dictionary.com] Yup fits but sounds strange for an Atheist.
Atheism is a religion like not collecting stamps is a hobby.
Yes, itโs an interesting site, possible aimed at educating believers as to alternative thinking in a non threatening way; whereas here theyโd have their eyes gouged out within minutes of posting any foolish questions lols!
Hate labels but i would say very simply that an atheist is 100% sure there are no gods or religions, agnostics aren't 100% sure.
thatโs incorrect though. agnostic is a modifier. there are agnostic theists and agnostic atheists. an atheist simply doesnโt believe in god; they donโt necessarily claim knowledge that there isnโt one. thatโs a gnostic atheist.
Like me, you could probably benefit by looking at the article then.
@basher yes, turns out Iโm an agnostic atheist, but have always referred to myself as agnostic.
@girlwithsmiles same here! i learned the difference from youtube videos though lol
@basher, @girlwithsmiles you assume I haven't, incorrect. The article is an opinion piece, with validity similar to my opinion, for definition I look at dictionaries, but again I hate labels, I am a non believer and that's good enough for me and truly I could not care less what others want to call themselves.
@Mofo1953 atheist: a person who disbelieves or lacks belief in the existence of God or gods.
agnostic: a person who believes that nothing is known or can be known of the existence or nature of God or of anything beyond material phenomena.
those are the dictionary definitions. i am an agnostic atheist because i claim no knowledge but have no belief in any god. thatโs what the terms mean. itโs fine if you donโt like labels, but donโt misrepresent atheism, please and thanks.
Which is the same as the link, lols, but thanks for making easier for people who have link phobias
@girlwithsmiles its easy to copy and share this way.
But what is a god, or gods?
Is an "ethereal connection between all things" a god?
Can an atheist be woo?
And what, if anything, does "spiritual but not religious" mean?
Iโm not even going to attempt to answer that. I believe that thereโs already a post about the Spiritual question, perhaps you could do a search? And what the heck is a woo?
Anyone else care to respond?
@girlwithsmiles Don't quote me, but I think 'woo' refers to magical, or something beyond observable reality. Curses, jinxes, charms and enchantments. That sort of thing.
@Captain_Feelgood oh, cool. Thanks. Learning lots here
@girlwithsmiles And I am pretty sure that includes Gods.
@Captain_Feelgood oh, well that puts another spin on it.
Thank you for the post. I had an argument with someone on this site only a week or two ago when he told me that I couldnโt be both atheist and agnostic....I do hope he reads this!
I completely agree.
I have stated many times why I identify as an Agnostic Atheist.
An Atheist, because I in no way believe in any kind or type of a deity.
An Agnostic, because I can't 100% prove it either way.
And I know I am not alone on that thought. I still don't understand how it is confusing to any one.
Just like you, I've had people argue with me on that point.
@Bierbasstard meaning some people do? Do we keep them in cages somewhere to visit?!
I get a bit tired with this constant argument about which type of unbeliever you are.
I also take issue with the comment that people adopt a label. Surely the labels are given out by theists.
If some people want to "half believe" in gods that's up to them but the default position would be non belief if children were not indoctrinated and then the term atheist would be redundant.
I honestly only knew about what the agnostic/ atheist difference was. I find it useful as people use the terms and now I know what they mean.
Didnโt mean to cause arguments, sorry youโve had to deal with that.
@girlwithsmiles Sorry, I am not having a go at you, just the fact that theists still appear to have the default position and people like the author of this article is kow towing to them and giving them a position they do not deserve.
Buncha control freaks in the world...ignore them
@Moravian Oh, I just liked the diagram and the fact it explained some stuff I didnโt know. I wouldnโt know about the rest of that stuff, sorry.
