I would bet that for some theists, coming into this group would be very exciting. Even more than it would be for a young kid going to Disneyland. The hard cores would believe there are demons in control around here, and that we are either possessed, blinded or being misled by an actual devil. They would think they have the power of god with them, so they are like super heros. Ha ha you know some of them would.
Example, my sister is an ordained evangelical Preacher. I mean stomp the devil out of the ground, tent revival speiling Preacher. And she thinks i am possessed and have demons around me all the time ha ha. She has thrown her hands up and cast spells, speaking in tongues at me many a time.To drive away the demons. So i can imagine the way some of the infiltrators of these types of groups must think of it..Ohhh it's a crazy place, this Earth.
Wow. Just wow. I had to re-read your example. Twice! Good on you for being patient and laughing about it, I gotta say. I too have been attempted to be 'saved' a couple of times but never like that lol. I can't imagine what family dinners must be like!!
And yes, I imagine that your first paragraph describes the mentality perfectly lol!! I always thought it kind of eye-rolling that there are starving, suffering people in the world but, to extreme theists, we are the ones that need saving, smh.
