I know it is a bit late since it is the 23 of Dec today but is anyone taking advantage of the Sam Harris ap Waking Up? It is free for the month of December and I am really excited by his insights on such things as consciousness and free will. It is based on his book 'Waking Up: Spirituality without Religion' and encourages Mindfulness as a way of truly coming to an understanding about ourselves. Thoroughly recommend.
If you are interested in consciousness you may get better informed by the plethora of psychology studies rather than pop psyche with an agenda.
I don't think it's fair to describe Harris' studies as 'pop psyche'. He is a neuroscientist. But he has spent 30 yrs of meditation so that is bound to influence his subjective philosophy.
I was drawn to him because I am a big fan of Russ Harris *no relation) and his teachings of mindfulness for mental health. I was studying psychology at the time. Now there are oodles of empirical evidence supporting the effectiveness of mindfulness for mental health disorders as well as ordinary well being. Much more effective than Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.
To be fair to Sam Harris and his too expensive subscription, he does say that if you are unable to pay the subscription, to write to him and he will provide it free.
I suggest taking a look before making a sweeping statement. He is no Deepak Chopra.
@MsDemeanour I donβt understand why subscriptions should be so expensive if he has to provide a subsidy.
As I say pop-psyche in a similar vein to Dawkins!
@MsDemeanour Not chiprak dipshit! Sam Harris, imo, is riding the wave of esoteric, mindbending, convulusive claptrap!
Sounds good but I do not deal with aps and deliberately do not have the phone for it. I can and will check Sam Harris out on You Tube which I play on a desktop computer. All of my interests and managed on a desktop computer and this is how I keep myself from becoming part of todays madness. I continue to watch TV and news from all over the world. i can literally watch anything that I want to.
google Sam Harris on You Tube and you will be busy for a year. He is brilliant atheist for taking on the religious. Never gets ruffled. and slips in a witty comment.
@MsDemeanour Not everyone is enamoured with SH.
@Atheist3 And did I mention good looking and charming??? lol. Sam is wonderful and can park his boots at my bed anytime. Actually nah, not really. He is nice looking but he has that nice guy thing going which lacks sex appeal. Christopher Hitchens now.......sexy as all hell. Didn't always agree with him but he had it in spades!
@Atheist3 I'd be interested in knowing what it is you don't like about SH? You don't agree with some of his stuff? Or is it him personally? I'm not sure I agree with everything he says. He believes in an objective morality but I'm not so sure. But he has such a wealth of ideas and he is a neuroscientist.
I'll maybe check it out. Love hearing good people's outlook on such things. I'm quite awake already, tho
or you can just go straight to the source and read the vedas.
mmmmm....no cos I haven't time to read religious texts. Sam takes the religion out.
@MsDemeanour meh, upanishads are more secular than not.it's not about religion.
@JeffMesser I'm not about to argue with you about ancient texts I know nothing about. Perhaps you're right. Let me get through Aurelius and Seneca first though.
@JeffMesser And may I say how very youthful you look. Obviously you stay out of the sun!
@MsDemeanour thank you so much! I attributed it to my sunny disposition.
@JeffMesser And good genes of course!
@JeffMesser love your humour. It's that straightforward
