If you think it is the right thing to "respect other's beliefs", please tell me why? Is there a limit to respecting those beliefs? At what point of harm caused to others do you cease to "respect other's beliefs"?

Respect is earned and includes giving it , such as one vet to another

I think it is important to carefully define what "respect other's beliefs" means. Does it mean that you respect what that belief is (as in that you believe in or follow that belief, too)? Or does it mean that you respect the fact that the other person holds that belief? Personally, I respect that lots of people believe some crazy stuff but I simultaneously may feel that what they believe is crazy. For example, if somebody believes that vanilla-garlic ice cream is fabulous, I think it is their right to believe that even though I don't agree and personally think pistachio is best. Then you ask "is there a limit to respecting those beliefs?" which is entirely new territory. I DO NOT think that my vanilla-garlic friend has the right to force me or anybody else to eat that, or has the right to outlaw pistachio. If somebody believes that the bible they read today is the actual inerrant word of god I think it is their right to believe that even though I think that belief is nuts for multiple reasons (1. I don't believe there is a god; and 2. the bible you read today bears little resemblance to the original texts anyway).

I like to take pot shots at about any religion. Why? Because it is probably the most brainwashing bullshit that is legal!

I took inbound orders for a fortune 500 company for extra holiday cash along side my regular job. One lady insisted I wish her "merry christmas" rather than what I told her. I said "happy holidays". I finally gave in and said what she wanted. I wanted to get the bitch off the phone because I was hourly + comission. Legally they probably couldn't can me if I refused to say it, but I'm sure they could find another reason...

The human side kicks in with me therefore respect is deserved in return no matter the person's beliefs.
I would not however respect a belief based on opinion and claims without truth or fact. I am an Atheist and "their beliefs" see me as evil even though my outlook in life about not accepting that a god exists is more plausible.

I respect no beliefs. I merely keep silent, until it harms someone.
What is harm?
Any lie is harm.
Bloating people's egos with narcissistic delusions, telling them to hate or avoid people with different beliefs, teaching children "morality" is just another word of absolute obedience towards whoever is stronger, etc. - are all harmful in the long run, and I speak out against all of it.

I will state that this is my idea, that I have come to, its a good idea for me. I think one can change an idea. If someone has a different idea then thats there Idea. I think there is a lot of weight on the idea of being right, and if im right then someone else is wrong. I still get that way in certain situations. I think most do. What I work on though is a practice. A great show in my opinion is Atypical. The lead star makes the statement that the best that can be said for practice is it makes better. There is no perfect, and i don't think anyone should try to be perfect.

I know my own history with religion and the practices of certain people in those religions, the practices of disrespect, hurtful statements, actions etc. Have I ever been angry, yes, have I ever practiced that same disrespect for those religions, made and laughed at jokes yes I have. I am familiar with the concept of eye for an eye, even to the point of the movie swordfish.

what do i practice, Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that .., For information's sake I am not attributing that to MLK. Apparently there is some debate on the entire speech and what was actually in his book and what was thrown in. [theatlantic.com]

how do I practice that, I practice working on my issues, finding out what about them doing something makes me angry, what exactly am I getting angry at. Dealing with why I am offended. There is the idea that while whatever person may be practicing disrespect and seeking to trigger me to elicit a response to prove himself right and I practice not fueling the persons claims

Its only a practice though, I work with a counselor and I go to meetings regularly

I told my Dad as a teen, as ran quickly away, that you have earn respect!
Some beliefs are so preposterous! I can’t see how respecting something ridiculous benefits anyone.
But at the end of the day we’re stuck here in the same place at the same time; if we can work together to get the jobs needed done then let’s do it.
I know what’s important to me, and if you believe a lump of candy floss created air then I don’t care as long as you’re not hurting people or stopping us from achieving what needs to be done.

Of course one should respect other's beliefs. You want others to respect yours after all, but yes if it is harmful physically or mentally then do stop.

Yes, that is a thoughtful question. In theory, all beliefs, pro or con regarding a god are subjective and personal. So my belief that there is no god is my own. Conversely, theists have their own logic supporting their belief. Since these are core beliefs, research and life have shown that people will not really stray from their core beliefs (I was always agnostic, then a bible thumper then athiest). That being the case, respect is a must to maintain civility and to be able to interact with people who believe differently. Just my 2 cents

Yes I think we should respect other people’s beliefs. Why? Because I want people to respect my belief. Simple as that.
