Whats the difference between a religion and a cult?

Size, it is all about size. All religions start as cults. The ones that catch on with the public become religions.

Cult is a group reacting against, or away from , society. A sect is a reaction against a parent religion.

Therefore cult and religion are not comparable.

Religions are recognized by governments, but other than that there is no difference.

Time, actually. Takes about 150 to 300 years to transition from cult to religion.
