I find it interesting so many "atheist" seem to substitute a supreme being with Government. So many seem to think Government should provide the things a "God" believers believe provide through the church. Many seem to believe there is no supreme being (Me included) yet want Government to be the supreme. I believe people are responsible for themselves and have no obligation to provide for others through either religious organization or Government. Most people will help those who truly deserve it without being forced.
If you are a believer in Government having the power and authority to force others to provide for those unwilling to take responsibility for or provide themselves, you are not an atheist, you simply believe Government is the supreme being. So many petition Government to force others to do what they can not persuade them do do. There is no compassion if forcing others to your cause.. It is NOT the Governments job to run our lives or force us, against our will, to provide for anyone.
