Stephen Colbert on Mitt Romney. Was Mitt sincere? Do you believe him? Respect him? Seems that the link I had here before won't work although it did when I posted it and tested it. But someone else found it and posted it below and I have put the link here with thanks to @whiskeywoman.
Being from Utah I know a little about Mitt, and have met him personally. Politically it was a pretty safe move for him. Utahan's will keep him in the Senate for as long as he wants. I'm sure a lot of Republican Senators felt the same way but just didn't have the guts to do it.
I think that it was strategic on his part to try to set himself up as the next republican candidate if Trump loses favor. Note that he invoked religion, so he wants that same religious base of supporters.
It just means that the people in the ruling class are not all the same. I believe that Mitt is sincere, and I believe that what he has done is the right thing. But that doesn't mean that his interests and ours intersect.
So I can't speak for who he is. But what he has done here is the right thing and brave thing.
I admire Romney's vote in the impeachment hearing. I do not admire his Republican stance on other things.
I just heard that the biggest elephant in Africa just died and they're planning to stuff him (true). I suggest they stuff him with Republicans.
Well, the least you can say about it is that it may turn the Mormons against Trump; for what it's worth.
I was happy to hear him say what he said. Because he said it when other people did not. I do not give a damn about sincerity, beliefs in his heart or whatever. I have low expectations of American Republicans. Resigning, switching parties or starting a new party would all be significant gestures expressing his displeasure.
Exactly! Arlan Spector switched, didn't he.

I think Mitt was sincere. He has given a speech about Trump not being honest during the 2016 election campaign also. Mitt Romney has also been very patient and thoughtful in voting on all other Democratic and Republican bills and sided with the Republicans. Note Romney voted Yes on impeachment for abuse of power but voted No on obstruction of Congress charge.
The problem with that is that once Trump was elected Romney changed his tune and interviewed for the Secretary of State position. He and Trump had dinner several times until Trump chose Rex Tillerson. Interested that he called Trump a fraud and then wanted to work for him.
@abyers1970 We cannot blame Romney for talking to Trump after the elections whether it was an interview call or a consultation call. This what decent people do. Not hold animosity and oppose and support for good reasons. Now that Romney has voted against Trump for the first time in 3 years, the Conservatives, Tea Partiers and Republicans will pounce on him and interpret all of his actions as premeditated and all else. I think Romney was deliberate and articulate in his voting against Trump and he was the same in voting to support Trump on every issue since 2016 for 3.5 years.
Mitt Romney imagines himself having conviction and a moral compass. He has occasional spasms of sincerity. Remember Romney is a Republican and Mormon.
I do not trust Mitt Romney.
