Why do hunters mount taxidermied deer heads on their walls? As a former vegetarian, I've become more open to the idea of eating meat. I respect hunters more than factory farming. But why mount a taxidermied head of an animal you killed up on your wall?
I personally don't have any deer heads on my wall, but I do hunt. Venison is delicious when prepared correctly. Now, why would one hang anything on their wall? A painting of something beautiful , a picture of a loved one... So things that are nice to look at, impressive, bring back good memories.. I enjoy the hunt, putting in the effort of preparing, practicing with my weapon to make sure I can make a good clean kill, travel, stalking my prey, all the things one goes through to respect nature and the animal you want to put on your plate for sustenance. I also have a coat made from pelts I collected over the years. The buck taste just as good as the doe. And once in a while, if you become a really good hunter, you have the chance to take a wise old buck that has lived a long and fruitful life. And sometimes they have very large and impressive racks on their heads. I think they are quite the thing of beauty. So, now one must realize that when a hunter is lucky enough to takes such an impressively beautiful animal for food and clothing, why stop there? Do you just chop the head off and throw it away? Why not turn it into a piece of art? Then every time you look at it, you are reminded of the awesome time you had preparing, hunting, enjoying nature, the delicious meals it gave you, etc.. Makes perfect sense to me. Now I've already seen the 'anti-hunting' folks on here talking their shit, and that's fine. You're entitled to your opinion. So don't bother responding here calling me silly names, or questioning the size of my penis like some sophomoric, self-righteous imbecile. It will be ignored. I hope this helps you understand a little better.. Cheers
Because it is not about providing food, or pelts for clothes it is all about mounting a pseudo penis on public display in order to demonstrate how much of a manly chap you are for defeating an unarmed beast with a $1000 high powered hunting rifle and lazer site from inside an armored land rover or treetop animal hide.
Back when hunting meant killing a beast in face to face combat with a spear or knife, putting your life on the line to feed your tribe or clothe them this may of meant something for the last hundred years or so it's just an ego boost.
Toxic masculinity that represents the big ego, small penis clan.
I would respect if it was physical hunting, pursuing and overwhelming the animal physically. A proof of physical capacity. But today's hunting is just stay still and shoot.
I caught a baby possum by hand a couple years ago. He put up a real manly fight.
@PondartIncbendog have you ever killed that mosquito that keeps flying around your year during the night? This is a real fight!!
It seems to me to be a vestige of the past, a primitive ritual of collecting and displaying trophies from the hunt. A practice likely as old as humankind. Though I must admit that an herbivore's antlers are somewhat less impressive than the claws and fangs of a predator.
Quite a few hunters in my family, and not a single one ever had stuffed animal heads mounted on their walls.
Never hunted, myself, but that doesn't seem like a very practical (or respectful) way of using animal products. Food, clothing and insulation, yes, but decoration.....no.
I had a friend that was a hunter. He used everything from the animal including making fish hooks out of their bones.
