Bernie vs. Biden: My Argument for Bernie
to me, it all comes down to the difference between the nature of Bernie supporters vs. Biden supporters. and, obviously, this is all just from my own personal perceptions.... your mileage may vary.
I believe it will take the combined total of Bernie AND Biden supporters to defeat Trump in the general election; neither Bernie nor Biden can win without the other's supporters.
here's where the difference between the two camps of supporters comes into play. it's been MY perception that Biden supporters will vote for ANYone to defeat Trump. on the other hand, I believe Bernie supporters are less likely to support Biden, even if the end result is 4 more years of Trump. I'm not going to get into the nitty-gritty details of WHY this difference exists, just identifying that this difference DOES exist(imo).
So, here's the two scenarios:
Biden gets the nod, Bernie supporters largely don't vote for Biden, Biden loses to Trump.
Bernie gets the nod, Biden supporters vote for Bernie since they'll vote for ANYone to defeat Trump, the combined pool of Bernie and Biden supporters is enough to defeat Trump.
IF my perceptions are close to the mark, the obvious logical choice with a higher chance of success is for Biden to drop out and let Bernie take the ball over the goal line. what have you got to fear.... Medicare for All paid for by rolling back the tax breaks for the rich?
I'll vote for Biden over Bernie, since I already can't vote for whom I want. I'd prefere Bernie, but there are serious concerns about how well he'd do in the general.
It basically comes down to flipping votes instead of generating new ones. There are conservative leaning folks who will vote for Biden over Trump, but will vote for Trump over Bernie. Flipping the votes of people who are going to vote anyways is, imo, a better strategy than trying to get people to vote who normally don't - which every single campaign ever has tried to do.
Either one will be one and done. Biden's not going to be cognizent enough to run again in 4 years (if he even is now). Bernie is old, but he has very little support in Congress, and has a history of sticking to ridged ideology when dealing with congressmen. His ideas are grand and sweeping, and you need tremendous support in both chambers to get them done. I don't think he has the backroom dealmaking skills to negotiate his will through congress ,and by the time 2024 rolls around he will have gotten very little of what he wants done.
Remember, the repubs will be screaming communism and socialism are taking over from the rooftops and use everything they can to screw it up. There's a large contingent of conservative dems that just won't be onboard with everything and are more worried about getting reelected than supporting Bernie.
If you think the republicans screaming about socialism will be more damaging than them screaming about how Biden is going senile and can't put sentences together, you're crazy.
They accuse all democrats of socialism. They will crucify Biden with accusations that he is losing his mind, that he and his son are corrupt, that he stood with segregationists, that he tells fantastical lies about getting arrested with Mandela, that he voted for Iraq, that he wrote the crime bill which harmed the black community so much, that he was shamed into dropping out in 88 because of plagiarism.... and all the while, Biden will not have the mental capacity to fight back effectively. It'll be a bloodbath on the debate stage.
If the youth won't vote for Biden if he gets the nomination it will show how really stupid they are. It is their future they are voting for, not us old folks. It will be a very lopsided SCOTUS they will have. It will be the environmental laws or lack of them they will deal with. They had better not get pissy, because they are only fucking themselves and their children.
I think you are totally correct.
Here's why I almost definitely won't vote for Biden. Even if most of us Berners show up for Biden, as we did for Hillary, he still won't win because he does not inspire the high turnout needed to overcome the lopsided representation of the electoral college. So the scenario would be that I degrade myself, compromise my integrity and morality by voting for the guy who wrote the crime bill, the guy who enthusiastically supported the Iraq disaster, the guy who is very loose with the truth talking about getting arrested to see Mandela, (completely false) the guy who is clearly in cognitive decline, and still we will lose. The result will be more Trump regardless of how I vote so I won't do it.
If something changes between now and then and it seems that there is a real chance he could win, I'll vote for him but as it is, no can do. It's not worth the slap in the face to my dignity if there is no chance it will change anything anyway.
Seriously he can't win without your vote.
I don't even care all that much if he wins or not. It won't make much difference.
@RoboGraham Do you seriously think the Supreme Court would look like it does now if Hillary had won? Continuing to elect republicans and trump means we will lose the Supreme Court for 50 years.
That will be a terrible tragedy. My vote will not stop it from happening. If the democrats run Biden they will lose. My vote for Biden will only encourage them to try that same failed strategy of running a terrible centrist again the next time. If they see that we are not willing to get in line and vote for whoever they choose for us, they might start to realize that they need to cooperate with us if they want to win.
