Rene Descartes: “I think therefore I am”. Well four hundred years - and a lot of neurological and computer science later.... Sam Harris: “I think therefore my brain still functions.” Doesn't the Sam Harris paraphrase sound simpler.
Brain is the mechanic Heart is the machine
Neurons are the link that link brain to the heart
I think therefore I am
think -brain
therefore-neurons
I am- heart
I am still stuggling with this equation ?
How does brain function without the pumping of oxsigenated blood to the brain from the heart and when does the neuron come in to play
I have always thought this saying was a pretty stupid one & nothing to get famous over......
Now recent research into animals proves many other species "am" too...elephants grieve, monkeys/birds etc fashion tools, and so on...plus, were they not doing it all along?
Being precedes thinking, therefore, if your brain ceases to function you are at least for all practical purposes, clinically dead. Your brain is still functioning under general anaesthesia but you are unable to think.
No offence intended but I think that Sam Harris's statement is like painting legs on a snake, utterly superfluous.
A brain functioning isn't the same as proving you exist. You could still be a thinking computer program.
Well, seems to me that both those statements say very much the same thing! If one's brain still functions one "is"! Cognito ergo sum is about as simple & concise as it gets!
