It explains why white supremacists and fundamentalist Christians, among others, are virulently anti-democratic: because the Koch brothers and other activists in the "vast right-wing conspiracy" are dedicated to manipulating their deep-seated prejudices in that direction.
It's very sad, and alarming, because it looks almost unstoppable.

I remember, no kidding, Barry Goldwater warning about politically-active religious groups... he said something to the effect that the0re was "no reasoning"" with them. Of course, that was in the days when Americals prided themselves on trying to reach consensus on issues.
