Okay I'm back seeking assistance with the new lingo please. Apparently time is short and using as few words as possible is important these days. For instance you can't say "what the hell?" anymore. It's now only just "the hell?"
So twice now I've seen in two different comment posts on Facebook just the word "This."
Anyone know the actual supposed meaning? No guesses please because obviously there could be a thousand possible choices. Thanks.
Urban Dictionary is handy for looking this kind of stuff up:
"Howabout" "This" (see what I did there ? ) :
Instead of "pardon me all-to-hell"
I propose (coin) the phrase :
"Pardon me -- all the way back to the big bang ! "
"This." or "This!" has been around for a while — years, anyway, though I'm unsure when I first started seeing it. I'm not a fan of the usage, but I can tell you what people mean: it is a reference to something that was posted, by them or by someone else, to say they agree with the message or support the action emphatically, generally to the point that they feel it epitomizes something important about a broader context. Think of "This." as a mega-size like button.
As for shortening to "the hell?" — I think that trend got started from people shortening "what the fuck?" to "the fuck?" or "da fuq?" or "d'fuq?" or some other spelling variant. That has been around for a while, too, at least since the Somali pirates were a concern, because I remember an episode of South Park where Cartman decides to become a pirate and recruits other kids to join him, and his repeated, incredulous response to others' actions is "the fuck?!" I think "the hell?" is just the more PG version, but I don't know when that started to become widely used.
Thanks
