Thoughts on globalization. For many years I’ve always been impressed by the insights of Civil War historian, Shelby Foote. One observation I remember is his statement that before the Civil War, Americans saw themselves as New Yorkers, Virginians or Alabamans. But after the war the personal image and zeitgeist slowly changed and no matter what state you hailed from – you were an American. The great technological advancements in the latter half of the 19th century and WWI had a lot to do with it.
By the end of the Civil War, European aristocrats thought America—and democracy-- were a failed experiment. The country was a wasteland, barely able to survive another decade. By WWI the U.S. led the world in railroads, aviation, automobiles, agriculture, telecommunication, and banking. So Foote points out that by this time Americans saw themselves as Americans, no matter what state they hailed from.
In the same way people have to change their self image if we are ever going to resume human evolution. Religions, individual self interest and venality have stultified human advancement. As a species, we’re still the same creature we were when Nero said “give them bread and circuses.” In two thousand years, our only advancement is Trump saying, give ‘em baseball, football and hamburgers.
To resume evolving -- and if we don’t we doomed to extinction – we have to advance our self image to Earthlings and evolve from American, Russians, Frenchmen and Chinese.
I admit it’ll take a long time but we don’t have much time left. It’ll take another generation just to eradicate the disastrous effects of Christianity and Islam which has placed the human mind in a mental cage. Hopefully the Internet will speed things up. Above all we need education for everyone.
Regardless of my political leanings I do believe that in the current direction we're in globalism could win. And if that is the case the question is how we should solve many of the world's problems before an official world government forms. Reminds me of 21st and 22nd century Star Trek.
The idea of "the other" will stave off true globalisms so long as people see other people not as "truly" human because of minor difference, genetically, culturally etc.
It will take a far greater "other" to bring people together united by being human, something not even remotely human that is a threat not to a way of life, but to life itself.
Quite so, and I admit it doesn't look good.
Even worse than the effects of religion is the rise of nationalism or "populism" as it is called for some reason. People like Modi in India,Bolsanaro in Brazil.Orban in Hungary, Trump in the USA are using the current pandemic to cement their own positions and causing substantial damage in doing so.
religion is a politically useful smoke screen to hide economic and social control behind, sometimes as a saviour, sometimes as a threat.
Globalization is a desirable thing but it is hard to have it when you are afraid you and going to be murdered or overrun by those crossing our Southern border. This and many other things in the current regime might take years to overcome. Now I quote you:
Our only advancement is Trump saying, give ‘em baseball, football and hamburgers. OK, let me add Trump defunding the Post office in an effort to prevent mail in ballots at election time.
he is pragmatic in his self interest, you've got to give him that.
Then, of course, most tyrants are.
The only point I was trying to make with that line was we haven''t evolved much in two thousand years excpet for telephone, TVs and computers. We still get into fights and have wars.
I often see the ideology of Globalization as being a ploy to increase the reach, etc, of the rich and powerful and the erosion of the individuality of the peoples and their nations, i.e. a type or version of George Orwell's 1984 one might suggest.
Yes, ensure that every man, woman and child is educated to the very best of their ability/abilities and do it for FREE but also ensure that their treasured individuality is fostered and kept alive and well.
For as it was once stated, " It is the individual that creates the society, not the society that creates the individual."
No the whole point of 1984 was divide and conquer, it was anti-globalist, lots of "nation" states and empires perpetually fighting one another as an excuse for exploitation and control of the masses.
@Green_Chile_Type he who controls the flow of information and "truth" available, creates the individuals. That is why eradication of dissidents is essential.
@Green_Chile_Type Individuals are not created by socal orders, they create themselves mostly by way of their own logic, reasoning, morals and ethics, etc, those exact same things with which we are all born with.
And No, the ideology behind the words in "1984" was to hold and have maximum 'control' over everyone and everything including thoughts, actions, etc, etc, i.e. Big Brother IS always watching you, in other words, STOP the Individuals in theur tracks, stamp them out for the good (???) of society.
Individuality is the bane of Totalitarianism it is not the child of it.
Please let me know where that quote comes from. It's certainly not true in ants. It's certainly not true of Communist Chinese under Mao.
@Aristippus Try Google or any of the other Search Engines.
I just saw one of the best documentaries on Amazon that speak a bit about what you mentioned in terms of becoming the manufacturing powerhouse.

It doesn't speak too much about the Nationalism. That's something that comes and goes every few years around the world. Except in Italy, I think. Like, if you drove down the street in Naples waving an Italian Flag out the window, the only thing people would do is wonder if they just missed the world cup soccer finals.
As for the rest of it, I whole heartedly agree. Trouble is, How?
How do you organize and educate when the whole world is now in their own bubble?
I suspect it will take more than a century to dispel the Christian/Islam conflict.
It’s a sibling rivalry so will tske many concessions and compromises to unpack especially with big brother Judaism standing in judgement of them both.
Religion is not the problem. The Abrahamic relationship is.
I like the sentiment, but returning to those times when we saw ourselves as one entity, Americans, will have no impact on human evolution.. Sorry to be so literal. but too many throw the word evolution without understanding the implications of what evolution entails. We need a different word to represent progress.
How can any country and its people see themselves as 'one entity'when we still cannot accept that we are ALL of the ONE race, i.e. the Human race?
America, like almost every other country/nation has been divided amongst itself since the very first days has it not?
International cooperation between sovereign nations is definitely required for the betterment of humanity. Since the so-called "Arab Spring", it has been evident that Globalism has been facilitating and encouraging the propagation of the cruel, oppressive, imperialistic, totalitarian political ideology of Islam. Until the Globalists decide to deal effectively with and counter that ideology, Globalism is a lost cause.
Those who are indoctrinated in and are enslaved and oppressed by the Islam ideology have the most to gain by its annihilation.
Like all words, "globalism" can have more than one meaning.
If you're thinking of it as a shorthand for the way industry treats the world as a market for raw materials and cheap labor from one half, and a market for selling at high prices to the other half, then I tend to agree.
But others may think of globalism as meaning that it's time to put petty nationalist disputes behind us, and unify behind things that matter- like climate change, ending war and poverty, decent health care and education for all, things of this nature. And to do that, we need to educate everyone into a new mindset, including those in the Middle East, that conflict is not the way forward.
Unfortunately, we in the US, one of the three remaining superpowers, are currently presided over by a President who doesn't believe in climate change,, sees international relations as a zero-sum game where someone has to lose for the other party to win, and withdrew us from the international treaty on land mines because he felt it was inconvenient. And he also thinks torture is something we should do. In other words, the exact opposite of the leader we need to help usher in an era of global cooperation.
I agree that a global human agreement to all work together to accomplish what our inept leaders cannot. None of the leaders want to give up the power to global leadership. The United Nations isn't working well. A big problem is most humans are group specfic, but we are at a time were being group specific is a hindrance to conquering our world problems.
How do the common people of every nation create together a bond so strong our leaders have to listen? And so strong we can make changes work? How do we get words to action?
I think money talks, & people have to start really promoting group funding for companies that have solutions. There needs to be a formation & promotion of a global non-profit whose goal it is to find the companies with the best solutions to the world's problems & aggressively promote said companies & seek donations to make grants to build them up. There are many good start-ups that cannot get enough capital raised simply because it would disrupt the incomes of those who hold the power in a particular industrial sector. In addition to this, they are in essence black listed by governments who answer to those industries that hold said power. Protests are not going to solve this problem. Again, money talks, & the average Joe needs to start donating to those who are willing to provide actual solutions. I donate to all the campaign funds of the "radical socialist populists" running for office in the U.S. & they are starting to build effective systems of organization to promote their cause & share & advocate for donations & support for each other. A similar network of radical corporations needs to be formed & they need to advocate for one another as well - but as corporations compete aggressively, this would likely have to be replaced by a non-profit that does this advocacy on their behalf. Then companies with solutions could compete for the non-profit's endorsement & business grants. There are such organizations already in place, but just as the radical politicians are doing, they need to join forces & create a supraorganization to effectively tackle this enormous problem.
On the topic of group dynamics: The evolved instinct for our species to maintain group divisions will most definitely be our downfall. In the past it may have served as a check on over-population as when tensions rose we responded with our evolved instinct to eradicate those not belonging to the group; but with the rise of global capitalism, such wars will increasingly become less common as the condition of "peace" serves the interests of those who own the rights to exploit the world's resources. And we'll end up causing total collapse of our ecosystems in the process. But all these divided corporate interests are not seriously considering how many people will starve to death when this happens. They obey their own insular group dynamics as well. There unfortunately is no effective supraorganization planning for the inevitable. The UN, WHO, etc. have all been infiltrated by the controlling interests & have largely become ineffective. We must take seriously the need to create our own supraorganization of existing groups of environmentalists, dedicated scientists, concerned citizens, radical corporations & radical politicians to tackle this head-on. But how to get them talking to eachother & attempting to form such a group?
I think the current COVID crisis has shown us that most humans will resist changes to their sense of normal until it become so painful that they feel forced to change and even then the modification will be slow and gradual unless they are subject to fines and imprisonment. Some humans are ready to evolve quickly enough to make a significant dent in repairing the damage our ignorance has already wrought upon ourselves and the planet but most of us won't be willing to change in the least little ways until we are forced to by pain , suffering and death. Witness the number of people who still bitch about having to bring their own grocery bags to the grocery store, instead of being able to select either paper or plastic and the bags are 'free.'
"It’ll take another generation just to eradicate the disastrous effects of Christianity and Islam"
IMO, that is a HUGE assumption.
Also, none/few of the "four horsemen"/'new atheists' claim to want eradication.
It's become abundantly clear, at least to me, that the entire anti-globalist mindset is
regressive. It's a completely failed concept.
We're all interconnected and what befalls one of us, mostly befalls all of us.
We now live in a global economy, and environmental catastrophes effect everyone.
If that wasn't clear before, it sure as hell ought to be now.
I would like to think that some day in the not too distant future we will simply think of ourselves as humans. Without distinguishing between ourselves based on which imaginary lines on a map constrains us, which imaginary man in the sky we choose to call god, or which imaginary race we belong to.
I don't see it happening realistically, but when we're ready, who knows?
