Is there a way to check whether a certain profile has been flagged as spam or catfishing?
I chatted briefly with a young woman who appeared to be from a xstian family and was struggling but there were a few things that threw me off; the poor use of language and the fishing approach to the conversation. I haven't heard from her since and someone flagged me and said she may be a catfisher, best to be avoided. At the same time it is concerning because she is about the same age as my daughter and I would hate to think that I left someone struggling with religion in a lurch but how much can you do?
Oh how nice it would be to be spammed or catfished.
"How r u?" is the lamest, laziest first message. I get this often.
"Not unwell," I reply. Thank you, George Carlin.
These dimwits can't figure out a double-negative. crickets
I have had a couple of one line messages from suspicious profiles and usually just ignore. Sometimes I will amuse myself with a response. Last one stated "I am bored, how about you?" I replied that the voices in my head keep me company so I am never bored. Never heard back.
Report the person if he/she insults you. That violates Community Guidelines.
Another option is blocking.
There are a couple of groups: Watchers, and Trolls, Scammers etc that will review the profile and offer our opinions to Admin. We don't make the decision to remove, Admin does. There are flags to watch for with scam, span, and catfishing. If you want to PM me I can take a look.
No flags available! You do have the option to Block, and for how long. You will find very few of that type here, they do not last long.
Since I presume catfishers don't bother us Feminist Atheists I could only guess what one is or does...so the female version would be a fake Atheist account seeking to scam a lonely man for plane ticket money to come marry him ?
Just give the "scam police" here the profile. they love deciding who's a scammer and who isn't
We don't make the decision, we do a bit of research and then bring it to Admin's attention.
@HippieChick58 not my experience here. Usually people just jump all over someone calling them a scammer
@lerlo My experience and my method is to look at the profile of the suspected scammer. How is their english, if they claim to be from the US and grammar/spelling/word choice is bad, that tells me possible NNES (non native English speaker), likely not well educated, which would be suspicious coming from someone who claims to have any advanced education. We look at what they claim to believe, if they are xians and this is an agnostic/atheist site they may be lost. Where are they from? Los Angeles, DC is a good trick. Abie, NE is one of my clues. Seriously no one lives there, and no apartments. I had a scammer claim to live there in an apartment. It is a really small farming community about 45 minutes from Omaha, but also alphabetically the first city in Nebraska, lazy scammers. We look at the pictures, and reverse image search. If they pop from a porn site.... If they are willing to relocate world wide... signs of a scammer. I've had too many interactions with men who would engage in conversation and then they need money and I'm the only one they can rely on.... sob. I knew a woman who spent over $10,000 on a scammer. In fact, I've heard that story from men and women. This is a free site, of course we will get people who want to take advantage of our collective naivete. I also look at who is contacting me. A drop dead gorgeous man is likely to raise my suspicions. And that man from a long way away has not read my profile. As I said, we take a look and alert admin. We don't have the ability to kick anyone off.
@HippieChick58 people who give money to these people are the reason they keep asking
@lerlo Yes, and the yearning for love makes people stupid.
