Why do Americans celebrate Thanksgiving when they know full well that after the first 'Thanksgiving' their predecessors just went out and set about slaughtering and stealing the lands, cultures and lives of the very people who saved them from starvation in the first place?
There’s never been a nation that didn’t rise from the murder of others. Of our crimes this was probably the most understandable. It wasn’t like Pilgrims could just get back on their ship and go back home.
Incidentally, I’ve been to First Beach, on Cape Cod, and Plymouth. Very moving.
I like the day as a good reason for good friends and food. My family is dead so wherever I go is by invitation and choice. Not a bad thing to feel thankful once in a while, either.
