This came up on another post. Why do some people update their icon photos every few weeks. Surely consistency is the most useful thing you can have, in something which is designed to help people recognize you, and connect your posts and comments together.
I like changing my picture periodically. Sometimes public events motivate me (death of Nelson Mandela, or COVID-19). And sometimes I just get tired of my picture.
I suppose as we acquire new images we like better, it's nice to update them once in a while. Every few weeks seems a bit often, but perhaps that's a cue into the member's personality, they like change. Those same folks are probably always rearranging their furniture and decorating their homes for various holidays. I have no problem with that.
This is me. You folks would recognize me in a dark alley
yea, and you really get around...I think I see you every time I go out at night...
I think I do it because I think the icon should actually look like how the person looks at the current time.
Can look like anything you wish, but I do think that there is something to be said for consistency. Personally mine is me aged eleven as painted by the village postman.
If you're here for dating, that would be true enough, but for folks who are not looking for in-person relationships... I can't see that it matters. My photo is probably ten years old, but I chose it because it is graphic and recognizable at a glance, sort of like a trademark. If I end up getting to know someone in a more personal way, there'll be plenty of time to exchange recent photos, but since that's not my goal here, I don't bother with constant updates.
Iβm a visually oriented person so I like easy recognition of the person Iβm responding to, but I guess some people may be more verbally oriented, so they pay more attention to names, or maybe some people donβt even care who theyβre responding to - I donβt know. I appreciate people who leave the same photo up so I can instantly recognize them, or at least use a consistent style of photo, like donotbelieve does, even though she regularly updates it. Maybe thatβs the best compromise.
It's like putting on a new outfit or expressing a mood. I like to change mine to fit an occasion or when I'm feeling a certain way. We also have names attached to our profile pic, we can only change that one time. We are recognizable by our names.
I've been a member for over a year, but initially landed here for the dating aspect, which I think most will agree is not this site's strong suit. I stepped into some bear traps while trying to find my way the first time here, (trolls, angry debaters, hookup hunters and romance scammers) but came to really enjoy some corners of the community aspect, as it does contain an increased level of enlightened, respectful, engaging conversation compared to most other social media sites. I left for a while but recently came back for the community ,and while updating some of my profile info, decided to change my profile icon. For me, it maybe was more about a fresh start and perhaps at the same time minimizing the chance of some previous undesirables making the connection. I figured anyone in the community I'd connected with previously on a relevant level would make the connection pretty quickly based on my name.
That being said, I see those who change their profile pic for messaging reasons as @Allamanda mentioned (I am more inclined to do this on fb where my 'friends' are largely people I know in real life and my real name is used) and I also think there is a group of people who do it out of vanity simply to ensure they get seen. On a site like this, where many people have never met in the physical world, I agree there's definite benefit to consistency when trying to connect posts and comments.
Beats me why people keep changing their photos...it seems pointless to me.
@Allamanda It throws me when someone I regularly have an exchange with changes their picture, and I donβt immediately realise whom Iβm having a dialogue with. I adapt after a day or so, but that probably says more about my cognitive ability or the lack of it than anything else! I guess there are reasons why people use avatars or abstract pictures instead of a picture...never even occurred to me to use anything other than a fairly recent photo.
