They are counting on many people thinking they just need to take care of today and forsake thoughts of tomorrow. I can't tell you how many 30 somethings have said things like "I'll worry about being retired when I get there - right now I've got to make that car payment or my kid needs braces"....or some version of that. You can't possibly impress upon a young person what it would be like to be old and dirt poor....their brains just can't process information like that. ughhhhh

At work the management tried the same thing basically with signing bonuses. They would offer a couple of thousand dollars now in exchange for worse deals on health insurance, smaller pay increases and other take backs. They knew it was cheaper in the long term for them, and would cost us more .
