If there’s one thing I’ve learned from having an account here, it’s that not everyone arrives at atheism through rational means...
Being atheist is rational.. How someone becomes rational makes no difference...
I decided at 12 yrs old that this god thing is all rubbish and that's the way it's been for me ever since. I later found out in my early 20s they call people like myself Atheists. I read books to educate me better along the way. I didn't even know a few books existed. There was no internet then. ...so you can imagine
What do you mean by "rational means"? Many, myself included, did just that.
No one ever arrives at anything through purely rational means. Reason may say that there is no worthwhile proof of god, or no evidence that it is good to believe, but to leave religion or even to hold a stance on it requires motivation as well as reason. And the motivation to do anything can only come from emotion, and I suspect that a lot of the emotion which drives people to adopt sceptical stances, is that of revulsion. Especially revulsion at the hypocrisy of religion, its crude morals, its basic tribalism, its unfairness and cruelty, its trivializing of the wonders of creation, and even the creation of a little petty god, etc. etc..
Which means that perhaps and in just a tiny way, in most cases, sceptics can make a small claim to higher moral feelings. Which is perhaps something, however small, and laying false modesty aside to be a little pleased about.
"No one ever arrives at anything through purely rational means."
I agree completely and what's more the attempt to do so only robs people of important parts of their humanity like creative inspiration, genuine empathy and a rich emotional life.
Care to expand on that thought? I'm curious what other means one could use.
