Stolen from my friend on Facebook
Blaming all cops for the thuggish and murderous behavior of a few cops is qualitatively no different at all from blaming all black people for the actions of a few.
Did I get that right?
My experiences with the police have all been positive, but I am a white guy. I understand that in some areas the police are more thuggish.
@Allamanda For over one century maybe, but I never experienced that. I left here as a young man.
I don’t believe police brutality would be tolerated around here these days. We know each other.
@LimitedLight We ain’t got no malls around here, but I’m not afraid to go anywhere in my county.
@LimitedLight Care to define "wrong side of town"?
@LimitedLight I didn’t say anything about being safe because of the color of my skin. I said I hadn’t seen any police brutality of the type Blacks report.
You are off on a different topic.
@LimitedLight I don’t know why it matters, but I live out in the country. There are a couple of houses a half mile away. You might be surprised at what I can conceive of from my Alaska days.
What does that have to do with my positive interactions with the police?
@LimitedLight so the police gave you trouble on two occasions. Any idea why they targeted you? Did they hurt you?
@LimitedLight No trend is guaranteed to last forever, however I am not expecting trouble with the police in my lifetime because people generally know each other in rural communities. The sheriff is an elected official, and I personally know one of the deputies very well, a Black guy who is my neighbor.
I am not going to worry about such a thing. If it happens I’ll deal with it.
I am sorry that you have had bad encounters.
Humans evolved no mechanism to identify and isolate psychopaths and sociopaths. Until we solve that problem we will always have us versus them fights.
The problem is how the police operate and their blue "above the law" culture. Every since the war on drugs gave law enforcement immense power, money and the ability to pry into anyone's private life with no restrictions, the racist and holier than thou amongst them have come out targeting the people they hate with precision. It not a case of a few bad actors, it's a case of systematic wide spread religious and political corruption within the organization. They have already put " In god we trust " all over their equipment proving that they are a religiously organized operation.
Racism's foundation is absolutely based on religion. Religion claimed that black people had no soul when they found entire continents of people of colored and no sign of their fabricated god or religion. How could an all knowing god not know of these people? Easy answer - they don't have souls so god ignored them as he did the rest of the animals. This is how it all started folks and then everybody forgot how it started but kept the mindset and the fake religion.
There is no such thing as a guardian than kills it's charge. Law enforcement is not our guardian - it's something else entirely and more like organized racism. De-fund the police by taking back every dime given and all powers granted to them for the war on drugs for redistribution.
"Did I get that right?" Not necessarily. Part of the problem as I see it is that training methods may include such things as kneeling on an aggressive person's neck to subdue them, choke holds, etc. Things that can result in a person's death when combined with a suspect's possible physical problems.
In regard to police training, I am sure that the cop who pushed the elderly man away, was likely due to his training where they are taught to push people away who reach to touch them...note that the old guy reached down near the officer's duty belt.
Therefore, instead of assuming that the problem is always a matter of police bullying, it may be necessary to change some of the elements of their training.
I stand by my comments and you are certainly entitled to disagree with me, as I am with you, especially If you believe it is a policeman's obligation to violently shove a man my age to the pavement just because he reached his hand (containing a cell phone) toward the policeman, or kneel on a man's neck as he screams for mercy, until he is dead. I Personally have had several very negative experiences with my local police force and I know how they respond with "knee jerk" responses to even totally non threatening situations. I concede that this may have more to do with the emotional state of mind of the police officer than with the training he/she receives, but the fact that we are armed to the teeth is something a modern police officer is well aware of when he/she enters the profession.
It is a profession wherein they will all be judged by the actions of the worst. And they all pay the price. Bad cops endanger good cops, so reform is in everyone’s best interest. But it all boils down to leadership. Some departments are moving forward with police reform, but more needed.
I agree with your statement. The question in my mind is how a city can survive long without police. If there is not a city police force, then private companies will step in, and they might become more thuggish than city cops. They might start fighting each other, mobster-style.
Private police for profit mercenaries not a good option. Somehow other countries can do it right. Better training, better leadership. And since social services are underfunded (poverty, mental health, homelessness, etc. ) government expects cops to clean up their messes.
I think you misunderstand the defund the police's arguments. Only some radicals state to eliminate police entirely. The rest are saying to take a more proactive approach and allocate LESS funding to cops and MORE funding to mental health services, youth employment, poverty initiatives, affordable housing, etc. etc. When someone is in mental crisis or distress they should be able to contact a mental health agency. But the only ones that can be contacted at all hours of the night, and that will respond, are cops. This should be changed. Cops are not well-trained to deal with mental health issues, as we have seen time and time again the world over.
